SPOILER ALERT: Agent Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg in the Marvel films, has something very unfortunate happen to him in The Avengers film (which came out back in May so this isn’t really a spoiler but I’m trying to convey this new news about the character in as respectful a way as possible to Marvel fans who have yet to see The Avengers). BUT, it was revealed this weekend at New York Comic Con that Agent Coulson (still played by Clark Gregg) will appear in the pilot episode of the new Joss Whedon-helmed Avengers TV series S.H.I.E.L.D. Naturally, this is great news for fans … read below to learn more about this geekily happy news.
Clark Gregg will appear in Joss Whedon‘s Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot for ABC, reprising his role as agent Phil Coulson, whom he has previously played on the big screen in the Iron Man movies, Thor and, most recently, Whedon’s The Avengers. “Did you ever think there would be a S.H.I.E.L.D. show without Agent Phil Coulson?” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feig said in announcing the news Saturday at the New York Comic-Con. (Though the way The Avengers ended raises questions about how the Coulson character could figure into a TV series, Whedon has said the pilot will be “autonomous” from the film franchise.) Gregg has also voiced Coulson for TV’s Ultimate Spider-Man and the Marvel One-Shot video shorts. His most recent regular on-camera TV role was opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfus on The New Adventures of Old Christine. Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D., as it is now being listed, is being executive-produced by Joss Whedon, his brother Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb, and written by the Whedons and Tancharoen.
It’s important to note that Coulson’s appearance has only been promised in the pilot episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. … which means that he may *only* appear in the pilot ep. Now, those of us know what happened to the character in The Avengers may be a bit confused as to how this character can appear in the S.H.I.E.L.D. series but … we’re talking about the world of comic books. Characters come and go, live and die very easily in the comic book world (much like characters in soap operas) so I’m sure they’ll come with a clever way to incorporate the character in this new series. It remains to be seen how much of Coulson will appear in S.H.I.E.L.D. but I can’t wait to find out. Yay!!
