One Of The ‘Breaking Bad’ Writers Is Scripting A Thomas Edison Crime Drama

Breaking Bad is THE show, from what I understand (don’t laugh at me, but I’m just now working my way through the first episode ever on Netflix) and one of the writers is getting ready to do some new ish! John Shiban, who also writes for Hell On Wheels, is working on a new script about a young Thomas Edison. The show will be a period crime drama and although I’ve never wanted to really, really watch a show about Thomas Edison, I’m kind of excited about this one! Click inside for more!
Deadline Hollywood has the story:

One of the world’s greatest inventors of all time, Thomas Edison, is the leading man of a new period crime drama project in the works at NBC. Titled Edison, the drama is produced by Sony Pictures TV and Mark Johnson’s Gran Via Prods. Written by Daniel C. Connolly (A&E’s Longmire), it is described as a big, fun, genre-driven show about young Thomas Alva Edison. John Shiban (Breaking BadHell On Wheels), who worked on the Johnson-produced Breaking Bad, is overseeing the script for the project, set in 1880s Manhattan.

In the show’s fictional storyline, Edison, already America’s greatest inventor, works as a secret consultant to the under-trained and under-equipped New York Police force. Edison, aka the original Tony Stark, uses his inventor instincts and retro-cool devices to deconstruct crime scenes and pioneer new technology. The period show is expected to have a modern sensibility, energy and tone evocative of the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes films. Connolly, Shibian, Johnson and Gran Via’s Melissa Bernstein are executive producing.

Okay, who’s in? As weird as it sounds (a Thomas Edison crime drama?), I think this could be kind of awesome! Unless of course it’s not. Some people are comparing the premise to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter but I don’t think the suspension of disbelief is that dramatic. An inventor is a scientist and I don’t think it’s that big of a stretch to imagine such a person (like Edison) assisting law enforcement agencies. Plus the Breaking Bad team is all up in here! I’m expecting good things, but what do y’all think?

    I’m so down!

I’m from Milan, OH, Edison’s birthplace…it’d be AWESOME if they filmed like a flashback scene there or something :)

Ooh Kristin, that sounds awesome! I hope you get a peek if they come through!
