Yesterday we learned officially that Fox has finally settled on the judging panel for the forthcoming season of American Idol and, as you may recall, we got our first look at all 4 judges — Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson — gathered together for a candid group photo with Ryan Seacrest and some Idol staffers. Today we get to see the first official photo of the judging panel as they sit behind the AI desk on their first day of work. Click below to see all the smiling faces from the new group of American Idol judges.
As was the case of The X Factor last year, the last members of American Idol‘s judging panel were announced just hours before the show’s first televised audition today. Here is the first group photo of new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban, joined by returning judge Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest at the taping in New York. Jackson is keeping his anchor spot as the last judge to speak, while Carey is positioned to open critiques.
According to Mariah Carey, the first day of judging sounds interesting:
#idol NY auditions – several classic moments so far lol
According to TMZ, the fighting among the judges has already gotten underway:
Mariah Carey wasted no time proving what we told you 2 weeks ago — there’s only room for one diva on “American Idol.” Carey and Nicki Minaj went at it during the first “A.I.” taping Sunday in NYC. When Nicki started critiquing a contestant, Mariah would interrupt — not once, but many times. Each time Mariah interrupted, Nicki fought back by loudly talking over Mariah. One “A.I.” spy said Mariah and Nicki tried to cover their disdain for each other but everyone saw through it, adding, “These girls just don’t like each other.” You may recall, we reported when producers called Mariah to tell her that Nicki would probably be joining her as a judge, she hung up the phone.
I’m not sure I believe this exaggerated version of events but I expect there will be some headbutting on the show … BECAUSE THAT’S THE KIND OF THING THAT PRODUCERS KNOW PEOPLE LIKE TO WATCH. More and more these singing competition shows are less about the contestants and more about the judges. It’s kind of a bummer that American Idol may play up the rivalry between the female judges because it just seems like a cheap way to go. But, cheap or not, expect to hear more leaked stories about how Mariah and Nicki are, to quote the TMZ headline above, at “each other’s throats”. Ugh.0
