Fourth Graders In Texas Were Told To Draw Violent 9/11 Pictures As A Class Assignment

That-Ish-Cray Of The Day
An American Education

Parents of fourth graders in Hughey Elementary School in El Paso, Texas are concerned and angry over an assignment given to their children recently. In an effort to teach students about the September 11 attacks, one of the school’s teachers apparently told children to recreate the events in a drawing. The mother speaking in the above video was told that the teacher gave very specific (and quite disturbing) instructions about what to draw, going so far as to ask children to draw the planes hitting the towers and the people jumping out of them. Children were told “the Afghans did this because they hate all of us and want to kill all of us.” The school district and administrators are investigating this, and I’m curious to hear what you guys think. On the one hand, this story is crazy disturbing, but it also reflects tons of other misinformation that gets taught in schools every day. I also saw plenty of comments on the HuffPost, where people were kind of like well, these kids need to know what happened. I agree… I just don’t see how telling children that ‘the Afghans did this because they hate all of us…‘ is the best, most historically accurate way to tell them what happened. But that’s just me! Your thoughts?

If the teacher wanted to tell them what happened they could have showed them news reports or personal accounts, not spew some crap that will just harbor confusion, frustration and anger in these children. The teacher needs to be fired asap!

I think this is disgusting and the teacher should be fired.
I am a teacher and I taught my students (10/11 year olds) about 9/11 this past week.
I answered questions, showed video footage of the planes hitting the towers and read excerpts from victims’ families. I also focused on stereotypes and how it’s unfair to blame an entire group of people for a tragedy.
The ignorance that spewed out of this teacher’s mouth should be treated severely – no wonder our education system is in the dumps…pathetic teachers like this one continue to work and corrupt the youth of today.

This is just scary and downright sad. There are many better ways to teach kids about 9/11 and our current involvement in the Middle East. Ways that allow students to learn accurate information, better their multicultural understanding, and work through any intellectual and/or emotional responses they have.

  4. Downright disgusting. This is so sad. We shouldn’t be spreading hate. Don’t kids see enough of that? This is why it’s SO important to have a relationship with your children. Don’t just send them off to school. KNOW what is being taught.

There is so much hate in this country and if this teacher is allowed to continue teaching after spewing so much hatred and fear it would be a disgrace.

This is exactly how terrorism begins in other places. Blaming an entire country and its people for the horrifying acts of a few. This type of message only promotes intolerance and hatred in children that look to their teachers to help build their core moral structure.
