First Look: Joel Kinnaman Surfaces In Full Costume On The Set Of The ‘RoboCop’ Reboot

Back in December of last year we learned officially that the planned reboot of the 1987 film RoboCop was back in production. In March, we learned that actor Joel Kinnaman was selected for the lead role in the film. In July, we got to check out a fun promo video for the new RoboCop. Today, courtesy of Coming Soon, we get to see Kinnaman in the full RoboCop costume on the set of the film. As you can see below, the new RoboCop looks a lot different from the original 1987 RoboCop so … this look is going to take some getting used to. Take a look at the photos below and see what you think of RoboCop 2.0. has your first look at Joel Kinnaman (“The Killing”) in the new RoboCop suit! Filming started today in Toronto and you can see the updated design below. Directed by Jose Padilha, the August 9, 2013 release co-stars Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. From Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Columbia Pictures, the film was written by Josh Zetumer and Nick Schenk, based on the 1987 motion picture written by Edward Neumeier & Michael Miner. The film is produced by Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, with Bill Carraro serving as executive producer. In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Now, as a fan of the original film (marginal, not really a superfan), I am still very excited that this film is being made. While I’m not always happy about remakes and reboots, there is something about RoboCop that I am excited to see come to new life. As for this costume … I mean, it’s different. The original RoboCop is just so cool looking in gun metal silver. The new RoboCop looks a lot like Batman in the Christopher Nolan films (and, undoubtedly, that is what some people will say). That being said, I don’t hate the new look. As I understand it, there will be different incarnations of the RoboCop look in the film and this is likely only one of those looks. I’m not sure exactly why RoboCop will have different incarnations in the film but … I’m just going to reserve judgement for now. Additionally, we also get our first look at what the Detroit Police cars will look like in this new RoboCop film:

I guess this car looks futuristic enough to pass muster … but by 2028, I’d hope that cars will be flying by then. Geeze. Still, this first look from the RoboCop set is very fun … and surely, it will get fans talking. We’ll have to wait and see how it all turns out but … yeah, I’m not hating any of this just yet. Are you?
