There’s nothing like a good Bible story about jealousy, sin, and… vampires. Will Smith just got the green light from Sony Pictures, as they’ve decided to produce what will be his directorial debut, The Redemption Of Cain. Will Smith plans to re-tell the story of Old Testament bros Cain and Abel, but with a twist. The twist being vampires. Obviously. Deets inside!
Complex has the story. And they don’t seem to thrilled about the ‘twist’:
According to The Wrap, Sony is putting the biblical epic, The Redemption of Cain, into production and it will begin filming in July of next year. The site is reporting that the movie will focus on the story of Cain and Abel from the bible, but with a supposed “vampiric” twist.
What do vampires have to do with the story of Cain and Abel? Not a thing, but in this post-Twilight age that we live in, studios have to put vampires in seemingly every movie in order to try and make a profit. Earlier reports suggested that Will Smith was looking to both star in and direct Redemption, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. What we do know is that his production company, Overbrook Entertainment, will be behind the film.

Well, I’m not gonna front like I’m not interested– I am! The story of Cain and Abel represents the world’s first murder and, considering that Cain kills his brother and then gets exiled… I can kind of see where some creatures of the night might fit in, lol. Anyway, vampire stories always have that religious bent (holy water, crosses, etc.) so the two things aren’t exactly unrelated, depending on how you look at it.
And I think we’re all just going to have to accept that (thanks to Twilight, partially) the vampires are here to stay in the movies.
So who’s into the new genre that may be Biblical vampire epics??? I think I am. Kind of.

Cain and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve; however, Adam had a first wife before Eve, Lilith, who is generally considered alternately a witch, demon or the first vampire.
woodroad34, I’ve heard about Lilith but she’s not in the Biblical story of Adam & Eve. From what I understand she’s a character in Jewish mythology, right?
Either way, she’d certainly make for a great addition to this movie, which is clearly not married to the biblical story, lol. I never knew that Lilith was considered to be the first vampire! Good stuff!
Shannon, you need to catch up on your True Blood, girl. LOL. This season was all about Lilith, mother of all vampires.
But you are correct, Lilith is a character from the Jewish mythological version of the creation story. In those texts, she was the first woman God created, but she had an issue with taking on a subservient role to Adam. So Eve was created instead.
Of course, they couldn’t have Lilith setting that kind of example in the official Bible, so that story remains firmly in the Jewish myth category. Lilith is mentioned as a demon succubus in the Bible I think. I’m very interested in what Mr. Smith could do with this.
Matthew, time to catch up on True Blood is literally all I want for Christmas, lol. And now that I know they’re getting all Jewish mythology up in there, I’m definitely gonna make the time!
Thanks for further clarification :)
Not much new in that premise. World of Darkness series suggested in back in the 90s.
