Essential Reading

As the heatwave continues here in SoCal, I continue to do my best to stay inside the air conditioned bliss of my home … but I did manage to be somewhat productive yesterday AND I even got out of the house. True story. At the start of the Summer, I rewatched the entire 7 season series of Star Trek: Voyager which inspired me to move on to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I finally managed to finish that series yesterday. Now that my TV goal had been met, I could move on to my reading goals. After running a few errands around town late yesterday evening (after the sun went down), I stopped for a glass of ice tea and did a bit of reading.

When ST: DS9 was on the air in the 90s, I wasn’t a faithful watcher. I’m glad I decided to rewatch the entire series because that show is really damn good. The last episodes took the story into epic territory and just when you thought the action was over in the series finale, another big storyline took over. I really enjoyed watching the series in full, it was time well spent I think.

After my running around was done, I stopped by Intelligencia in Silverlake for coffee and decided to get iced tea instead. I brought along my hardcover copy of Jack Kerouac’s On The Road (The Original Scroll Version) and started rereading:

As I’ve mentioned before, with the forthcoming release of the On The Road movie, I wanted to reread the classic novel to refresh my memory. It’s been a few years since I’ve read the book so I thought now would be a good time to get started. For those of you who don’t know, the Original Scroll Version of On The Road was Kerouac’s first draft of the book. This version includes real names, more “obscene” content (ie. things that were considered obscene in the 1950s … like any discussion of homosexuality) and a more frantic, genuine description of events. The edited version of On The Road is the version that everyone knows but I’m a big fan of the unedited, original scroll version.

While at Intelligencia, I got to meet Pink reader Connie:

She came over to say hello and introduce herself and we took this supercute photo together :)

Today, I’m hoping to get to spend some time with Ollie and Jordan so that should be fun. I was planning on going for a long run today but I might have to postpone. First, it’s hotter than Hades out and second, I kinda want to hang out with Ollie and Jordan. I hope YOU all have a great Sunday. I’m gonna try to enjoy mine :D
