Watch: Robert Pattinson Visits ‘The Daily Show’, Kinda Talks About His Break-Up With Kristen Stewart

Last week we learned that Robert Pattinson would be giving his first post break-up interview to Jon Stewart on The Daily Show and, in case you missed it or just want to watch it again, today we get to watch his interview appearance on the show in full. The interview was meant to focus on Rob’s new film Cosmopolis but, naturally, the elephant in the room was all about his break-up with ex-girlfriend Kristen Stewart (who cheated on him openly with a married man). Jon, who is clearly the best BFF ever, consoled Rob over pints of ice cream and managed to get him to joke a bit about the break-up. It was basically the perfect way to handle this embarrassing situation. Wat the video above or, if you cannot watch right now, click below to read about how the whole thing went down.

“Obviously, uh, uh, what have you been up to?” Jon Stewart opened the interview. And as Rob complained that that the host had ruined his setup joke, Stewart proceeded to bring out two pints of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. It was an obvious nod to the fact that Rob was going through a breakup. “We’re just two gals talking,” Stewart said. But then, it turned out, “talking” equalled a lot of talk about the ice cream melting in front of them. Or were there subtle references to the Kristen Stewart-size elephant in the room? It’s hard to tell. “What are we doing here? Are you all right? Is everything OK? I’m worried about you, and you’re all right,” Stewart asked, sounding a little more like a grandma than an interviewer. “I just don’t even know how to approach this now,” Rob answered, which out of context, sounds like he’s actually referring to how to approach questions about his love life. But then Stewart rescued him: “The ice cream? ‘Cause it’s a mess.” Yes, the ice cream. And also his love life, right? As RPattz complained that he’d been too cheap to hire a publicist, who would have helped him get his funny, non-Kstew anecdotes ready, Stewart jumped in and said that hiring a publicist now would only help if he had a time machine. A time machine to go back before the Kstew mess happened, or to when he booked the Daily Show? Then Stewart actually mentioned the B word. “The last time I had a bad breakup, Ben and Jerry got me through some of the tougher times. So I thought you and I could bond over this and talk about, ‘Boy you are better off. Kick her to the curb, whatever.’ ” And Stewart’s silly voice allowed Rob to avoid saying “yes, I had a bad breakup,” and instead quip, “Is that an impression of yourself?” Stewart once more broached the topic. “When you are young and you break up, it’s powerful and it feels like the world is ending,” he commented. “This is the first time I have seen the world actually react that way. It’s insanity.” And since none of that was a question, Rob didn’t have to say a thing. Then again, he didn’t deny anything either. Finally, after Stewart said he wished Rob would “get handle your business in private, in your personal life,” they moved on to talk of his David Cronenberg movie. To humor Rob, and because we are genuinely interested in Cosmopolis — just you know, not more interested in it than in other things, sorry — here’s a good quote he got in about the flick: “One of the only things I think I’ll ever do where I can say, I don’t think it’s ever going to be made again, and I don’t think it’s ever been made before. And regardless of how people see it, at least it’s something new.”

So there you have it, Robert Pattinson kinda sorta acknowledged everything that Jon Stewart said/threw out without having to actually acknowledge anything verbally. As I said, it was the perfect way to handle this story. It’s clear that Rob would much rather NOT be on TV right now but because of his commitments to promoting Cosmopolis, he has to do these interviews. Jon Stewart knew how to address the elephant in the room in a clever, funny and heartfelt way that seemingly put Rob at ease. I don’t know that other interviews that will broach this subject will be as tactful but, we’ll see. It’s good to see Rob being so good-natured, especially in light of what he is going thru (not only the break-up but having to deal with the ramifications of his break-up in public). This interview is great, ain’t it?

  • Andy

Both men are class acts. Hope other interviewers show him respect in the future. But man, you can tell he’s lost a lot of weight since the whole ordeal, and that pretty much is a tell tale sign of pain and stress.

No, I’m not a Twihard but yes, having had horrible break-ups myself I do have empathy for the poor bloke.

  • Meghan

John is awesome! Just great the way he handled what would have been a really awkward interview for Pattinson. I agree with Andy, both men are very classy.

  • Linh

I love Robert Pattinson even more. What a charming nice guy.

  • Ivy

I must have missed the part when Rob said that they broke up. Because I didn’t hear him say that.

    • @Ivy — Right, that would be the “kinda sorta” part. He let Jon do all the talking and his refusal to deny anything was kinda sorta his way of confirming.

    • Ivy

He never commented on their relationship before so i doubt he will now. It’s sad that the media isn’t focusing on Cosmopolis ,which he clearly said thats what he was their for.The media always said/wrote costar/ supposed gf until about three months ago. IMO we always knew nothing. During this whole thing we’ve known nothing. We continue to know nothing.

    • Joan

They never were the ones to openly flaunt it. They never went out of their way to confirm it. They were very cautious and private about it, but there’s only so many ways they got away with it. In some many words, they both, Kristen and Rob, talked about their relationship in numerous interviews. But I agree, it’s sad that every Cosmopolis article makes a mention of the cheating scandal. Sad for Rob, but not surprising in the least.

Kristen should get her first appearance out of the way before the Breaking Dawn promo tour starts. Otherwise, I think it might make it more difficult for them to deal with the press. She needs time, understandably, but doesn’t have much time either.

  • Krissy

I love Jon Stewart, but I thought he drug out the whole break-up talk a little bit too long. I think the ice cream part was cute and funny, and I knew he would have to acknowledge it, but it seems a wee bit insincere to say you are going to let someone handle their business in private after you forced them to talk around it for 7 minutes. I thought JS would have just touched on it for a minute or so, and then move on. RP seemed genuienly uncomfortable for a long time.

On another note…Rob is so regal looking in still photos…but in real life he has a bit of a “dorky” quality to him, no? I was kind of surprised by his laughing style! Not that “dorky” is a bad thing, it can be quite endearing, but the contrast of that with his still photo swagger is interesting.

    • Joan

Yep, Rob is a huge dork! LOL In a good way. I’m for dorks. ;)

  • Serenity

I love Jon Stewart. I was glad to hear he scored the first with Rob because I knew it wasn’t going to be one of those awkward interviews where he seriously pretends to be as broken up about things and dig until he gets SOMETHING.

  • Melissa

So, I thought this might all be a publicity stunt, but I think it may be real now. Sigh. Great interview though…hats off to Jon Stewart.

    • Jackie

Seriously? A publicity stunt where a wife & kids got hurt?

    • Melissa

Take it down a notch, Jackie. It is called sarcasm. Sheesh! LOL at you!

  • Joan

Wow, Jon was fantastic! I’m glad that Robert took it with the humor and remained his dorky self. I was laughing so hard! I lost it a couple of times, with the ice cream, the “Now we’re just two gals talking” and the “Boy, you are better off. Kick her to the curb, whatever!” PRICELESS. It’s gotta be a huge relief to get that first appearance/interview out of the way. I think he did as well as he could have possibly done. Good for him.

Hopefully he doesn’t ever get a publicist.

  • Kate

    The best line was:
“When you are young and you break-up, it’s powerful and it feels like the world is ending. This is the first time I have seen the world actually react that way”
Truer words have never been spoken

  • Sarah

Omg love it. Love him being too cheap to hire a publicist! Poor thing, now hopefully he can laugh it off at all the interviews.

  • Lexeeee

Ahhh idk why she would even consider cheating on him. He is so good looking. Like damn ;)

  • Ruby

Awesome interview. Probably the best one Robert could do right now.

  • laurenl

Good on them. Ice Cream win! Some writer at Daily Show needs a nice raise. Before GMA steals them. To fix that catastrophe of an interview that I couldn’t even get through… I love Daily Show and I’m so glad Jon got the win.
