10. Always Be My Baby (Mr. Dupri Mix) feat. Da Brat, Xscape (1996)
This remix makes me want to make up, break up, make babies, weep tears of joy, weep tears of heartbreak, and mourn the loss of the 90s. Suffice it to say I’m a little emotional right now. On an unrelated note, why are Da Brat’s braids still better than everyone else’s?
9. Obsessed feat. Gucci Mane (2009)
Is there anything greater than hearing Mariah Carey sing the words “Napolean complex“? No. No, there isn’t. Unless of course she’s singing it on one of the greatest diss records ever. Shouts-out to Eminem. And Gucci!
8. Jadakiss feat. Mariah Carey: U Make Me Wanna (2004)
Mr. Raspy and Madame Butterfly teamed up to bring us a classic ride-or-die chic song. And from this we learned that Jadakiss may be a gangsta, but when Mariah’s in the bulding he just wants to make loooove.
7. Heartbreaker Remix feat. Jay-Z
The moment when I officially developed insecurities about my body. Commence hating….. now!
6. H.A.T.E.U. Remix feat. OJ Da Juiceman, Big Boi, Gucci Mane (2009)
OJ Da Juiceman? Gucci Mane? Seriously, only Mariah could pull this off. And yes, when you’re finished listening to this, you’re allowed to go watch the original Ghost Town DJ My Boo video.
5. Honey (Bad Boy Remix) feat. The LOX, Puff Daddy, and Ma$e
Sigh. A lot’s changed since 1997! The LOX fired Puff Daddy. Puff Daddy became Diddy. And Ma$e retired to become a preacher. At least we can always count on Mariah… to never change her name, and never enter the ministry. Fingers crossed.
4. Fantasy Remix feat. Ol’ Dirty Bastard (1995)
We wouldn’t be here enjoying this epic jam session if it wasn’t for this song, the first ever Mariah Carey/seemingly misplaced but ultimately genius rapper collaboration. Brooklyn is, in fact, in the house. This one’s for you, ODB!
3. Oh Boy (I Need You) feat. Cam’Ron (2002)
When I first heard Cam’Ron’s Oh Boy sample on this, I knew M.C. was about to take us someplace special. I wasn’t disappointed. Throw in Cam’Ron’s unnecessarily thick Harlem accent to compliment Mariah’s super-sweet, pitch-perfect vocals, and you’ve got one of the greatest songs in the history of music, sound, and humanity itself. Oh, and then Cam goes and shouts-out Tweet? Done!
2. Jay-Z feat. Mariah Carey: Things That U Do (2000)
Easily one of my favorite hip-hop songs ever. Swizz on the beatz. Mimi on the hook. Pure madness. And, before seeing the Complex magazine list, I had NO clue this was Mariah. So yeah, I’m done. She reigns. Oh, Jay reigns too. But I already knew that :)
1. Breakdown feat. Bone Thugs-n-Harmony Breakdown (1998)
Um. I graduated from Cleveland School Of The Arts. In Cleveland. Home of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. There’s no way this wasn’t going to be number one.
*Special thanks to the love of my life. This list would not have been possible without the moment when he almost walked out on our family because the Fantasy Remix was [originally] not in the top five. That’s when I knew ish was real. And although we remain in disagreement over number one, we’re trying to work through it. Mariah will help with that. She always does…0
