Watch: Brad Pitt And Ray Liotta Bring ‘Gangster’ Back In The ‘Killing Them Softly’ Trailer

Now I don’t know how I feel about calling any film– no matter how poignantly gangster it might be– ‘this year’s Drive.’ But, I am excited to hear that this is what critics are saying about Killing Them Softly. Brad Pitt plays Jackie Cogan, a seasoned enforcer who comes to Boston (hells yeah!) to set some small-time crooks straight. The movie is directed by Andrew Dominick who also directed Pitt in his 2007 Oscar-nominated hit The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Between the two of them, Ray Liotta, and James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), I think it makes sense for mob movie-lovers to get excited.

Apparently, we can also except the film to have some serious political overtones. It premiered at Cannes back in May and critics noted that the movie opens with an excerpt from Obama’s 2008 Democratic Convention speech, and the plot functions as a form of anti-capitalist entertainment.

However deep it gets, it’s going to be very interesting to see Brad Pitt take on this role. And since The Departed and Goodfellas are easily in my top 5 have movies ever, I’m crazy excited to see how this turns out (not that I necessarily expect it to turn out like them). Do you guys think Brad can pull it off? And did you see Richard Jenkins– the Dad from Step Brothers? Lol. Love him!

Killing Them Softly opens in theaters on October 19.
