The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards Nominations Have Been Announced

Rihanna and Drake Nab the Most Noms

It’s that time of the year again … time when MTV makes known the artists who have been nominated to win their coveted Video Music Awards for 2012. Now, I know what you’re thinkin’ … each year, many folks (me included) tend to have a love/hate relationship with the VMAs (I mean, let’s be real … some years the show is amazing, others notsomuch). But invariably, I approach each new VMAs with a certain level of excitement because at the core, the VMAs are a fun awards show. This year, Rihanna and her homie Drake lead the way with the most VMA nominations — they each nabbed 5 noms including Video of the Year. Click below to find out which other artists will be vying for MTV Moon Man trophies this year and see if YOUR faves made the cut.

Rihanna and Drake are bound to cross paths during the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. Following a year when both singers pushed the boundaries of their sound by mixing in even more dance and R&B flavor, the pair lead all nominees at this year’s awards with five nods each. Rihanna, in fact, has two chances to take home the night’s biggest prize, as she’s up for Video of the Year for her solo hit “We Found Love” and her duet with Drizzy on his “Take Care.” This year’s show will air live on September 6 at 8 p.m. EST from the Staples Center in Los Angeles and feature performances from four-time VMA veteran Alicia Keys and VMA first-timers One Direction. Last year’s big winner, Katy Perry, is not far behind with four nominations on a show that will also shine a light on the global EDM explosion with a Best Electronic Dance Music Video category featuring such bold-faced names as Avicii, Martin Solveig, Skrillex, Calvin Harris and Duck Sauce. Rihanna will also duke it out for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and possibly get on the board in a number of professional categories, including Best Choreography and Best Visual Effects. Drake’s nominations include bids for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Male Video, as well as Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography. A bumper crop of acts are in the running with three nominations, among them Beyoncé, Coldplay, Frank Ocean, M.I.A. and the Throne. A couple of VMA newbies also got multiple nominations, including Gotye, Lana Del Rey, Fun., Avicii, and Skrillex. Among the fresh faces getting on the board with one bid are: A$AP Rocky, Childish Gambino, Imagine Dragons, Of Monsters & Men and the Wanted. The video of the year category is super tight, with Perry’s gothic sleepwalk “Wide Awake” and Rihanna’s love on the edge clip “We Found Love” facing off against Gotye’s inescapable, paint-splattered clip for “Somebody That I Used To Know,” M.I.A.’s desert ghost riding “Bad Girls” and Drake and Rih’s atmospheric “Take Care.” The Best New Artist race is a MTV Summer Jam Olympics-style stroll through the songs that have defined the year, from Fun.’s “We Are Young,” to Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” Frank Ocean’s “Swim Good,” One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” and the Wanted’s “Glad You Came.” Kanye West has two shots at the Best Hip-Hop Video crown, one on his own for “Mercy,” and another as part of the Throne for the flashy “Paris.” Those two will go up against Childish Gambino’s “Heartbeat,” Drake and Lil Wayne’s “HYFR” and Nicki Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap.” Justin Bieber is among a number of double nominees, with love in the Best Male Video race (where he’ll face Ocean, Drake and Rihanna’s “Take Care,” Chris Brown and Usher) and the Best Pop Video (One Direction, Fun., Rihanna and Maroon 5) … Beginning Tuesday (July 31) at 6 a.m. EST, viewers can vote for general VMA categories, including Video of the Year, Best New Artist and more by visiting vma.mtv.com online or m.mtv.com on their mobile phone. In addition, Best New Artist is available for voting via all wireless carrier subscribers by texting BNA to 22444 or by visiting MTV’s official Facebook page. Voting for all VMA categories, except Best New Artist, will end on August 24 at 6 p.m. ET. Voting for Best New Artist continues through the show on September 6.

There are quite a lot of new folks in the mix this year … Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Skrillex, Gotye … all to be expected. It’ll be very interesting to see how the veterans (Rihanna, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj) will fare against this new crop of newbies. Based on the noms alone, I think this year’s VMAs is going to be a good one. Here is a full list of 2012 MTV VMA nominees — are your faves included?

For the first time in many years, the MTV Video Music Awards will air on a Thursday night (instead of a weekend), so make sure you tune in on September 6 to watch the show LIVE on MTV. I got a feeling, y’all … these noms give me hope, I’m loving the return to the Thursday night award show … this year’s VMAs could be one worth loving. We shall see. Who are you rooting for to win awards? I’m on Team Newbies, how about you?

  1. Britney'sBitch

No Britney, Lady Gaga or Madonna wow haha

  2. James

I was thinking the same thing… About Britney and Madonna, lol. The Girls Gone Wild video was Madge’s best in ages, tbh. And Britney’s Criminal video was very sophisticated. I mean, the least they could have done is throw a nom Brit’s way, after that flop “tribute” last year.

  3. ‘Best Video With A Message’!

  4. Dot

Yeah I’m surprised “Criminal” wasn’t nominated!

  5. These should be renamed the VEVO Music Awards. I haven’t seen a video on Empty-V since TRL went off the air.

  6. im actually really surprised ‘Criminal’ wasnt nominated, it was easily one of Brits best videos – but then again its MTV, so im really not that shocked.

and i never, everrrr, thought i would say this..but i hope Lil Wayne wins for “best video with a msg’ – How To Love. great song, that really had a good msg in it.

  7. mark

I’m very disappointed that Florence + The Machine wasn’t nominated for “Shake It Out”, that’s one of the most beautiful music videos I’ve seen in years. Happy that Lana Del Rey was nominated (though it should have been ‘National Anthem’ rather than ‘Born to Die’, IMO). And WTF is this ‘Video with a Message’ bullshit? LOL OK MTV.

  8. JCZ

Are we forgetting this is the MTV that snobbed Britney up until Piece of Me, which we all know is not even in her Top 5 videos, maaaaybe Top 10 (brownie points cause she actually filmed it during her crazy days and everyone thought she wouldn’t).

    Baby One More Time
    Stronger
    Oops I Did It Again
    Toxic
    Me Against The Music
    Everytime
    Slave 4 U
    Overprotected

Besides Toxic & Everytime – all of those videos deserved Best Choreography. All of those put every recent dance video to shame. MATM & Slave 4 U are much greater than Single Ladies IMO. Overprotected is her underrated work and dance work also.

VMAs are just paid for awards anyway. Either that or they’re awards offered to celebs to attend.

  9. Lisbeth Slander

The VMA’s are dead to me. Madonna put out two of her best videos in YEARS (Give Me All Your Lovin’ and Girl Gone Wild) and nada. It’s sad that Rihanna and Katy Perry are even remotely considered as “veterans”, they’ve been in the game for like, 30 minutes!

  10. It seems like just another flat year for the VMA’s. I do love me some LDR though. Still no Britney not worth watching. Thank God for the X Factor gig, girl is taking too long for my blood to put out another album. (I come from the days where she was the Rihanna of album makers..) I guess I was just spoiled back then lol

  11. Linnea

Bey, really.. Love on top nominated as best femaøe video? Naah, seen betrer
