Fiona Apple + Sweet & Tender Hooligans = One Amazing Night

The TV Guide

After enjoying a string of relatively quiet days lately, last night was a big night for me. Not only did I get out of the house to see a concert … but I managed to see 2 full concerts back to back. Impressive, I know. For months, I’ve been looking forward to Fiona Apple‘s return to LA so I’ve been eagerly awaiting her concert stop last night at the Hollywood Palladium. A week ago, I learned that the amazing Morrissey/The Smiths coverband Sweet & Tender Hooligans were playing a show at Vertigos in downtown LA on the same night. I was hoping I’d be able to make both shows … and happily, I did.

Last night’s show at the Palladium was Fiona‘s first since the release of her new album and it was packed to the rafters with eager fans. I have to say, Fiona was divine. She sounded amazing. A-MA-ZING. I attended the show with my BFF’s Ollie and Tony and we all thought she put on an amazing show. Altho her start time was a bit late (she admitted the delay was caused by her nerves), she managed to perform an excellent setlist of old and new songs. It is so amazing to have Fiona Apple back. I’m sorry but I miss the hey day of strong, talented female musicians. Watching Fiona captivate the sold out house renewed my faith in humanity. Her show was stunning, simply … wonderful.

As soon as Fiona was finished, I hauled my buns downtown to make it to Vertigos to see Sweet & Tender Hooligans and I made it just in time to see the full show (I only missed the first couple of songs). While Fiona‘s concert was strong in her own way, the Hooligans are strong in a different way. They’re a coverband, yes, but they play the HELL out of those Smiths/Morrissey songs as if they were their own:

Here is video of the Hooligans performing Suedehead:

This is the second time I’ve seen this band live and they managed to impress me even more. I love The Smiths so much, it’s pretty damn cool that I get to see this band do their songs justice in concert. Lead singer Jose Maldonado is the Mexican Morrissey, he looks the part but more importantly he sounds the part. I’m a fan, I gotta admit. I’m so happy I was able to see both shows last night. I’d've been bummed if I had to miss one or the other.

Tonight, David and I are meeting up with Tam and Rob after FAR TOO much time apart. It’ll be really great to hang and catch up with them. I hope you are having a fab Monday!!

I to saw Fiona last thursday night in Portland. She was late coming out and Fiona told us the crowd “They opened the door for me to come out but I needed a tampon but they thought I was fuc*ing with them so I was waiting all that time for it.” It was hilarious but all was forgiven when she sang and it was amazing
