Movie Review: ‘Beasts Of The Southern Wild’

The TV Guide

For months now I have been hearing about a film called Beasts of the Southern Wild but for various reasons, I haven’t been able to find the time to see it. Honestly, I haven’t had the time to see many of the movies that I’d been hoping to see. After reading Shannon’s post on the film last month, I was determined to make the time to see it … and last night, I finally did. Beasts is a difficult film to describe but I will do my best in my review below. It is, IMHO, one of the most compelling and powerful films I’ve seen in years … and its young star, Quvenzhané Wallis, is nothing short of amazing.

I honestly cannot say enough good things about Quvenzhané Wallis‘s performance in the film as HushPuppy but I’ll get to my gushing in a bit. First, let me explain the film itself … as best I can. Beasts of the Southern Wild feels mythical in the way it unfolds. A group of gritty characters living their lives in happy exile as they battle the forces of government and nature. It’s one thing to say that the actors in this film give excellent performances, which they do, but they somehow have the ability to make their stark world that is unknown to us not only believable … but, at times, desirable. There is an honesty in this film that is lacking in many other fine films. More than just merely realistic, the honesty that we get from Beasts is so compelling it’s damn near life-changing. At the heart of this story is a young girl named HushPuppy played by Quvenzhané Wallis. When I tell you she gives the best lead actress performance of the year, I’m not being hyperbolic … anyone who sees this film, I must believe, will agree with me. I was astounded by her performance. Watching Wallis‘s performance in Beasts of the Southern Wild brought in me a range of emotions … including head over heels love for that sweet little girl. Man. She is just phenomenal … more than phenomenal … I can’t think of a word to adequately describe how good she is in this film. But, I fear my exuberance may turn off some readers who may think that she cannot be that good in this film. I urge you all to see this film and see for yourselves. If there is any justice in this world, then Quvenzhané Wallis will not only garner an Academy Award nomination … but she will win the trophy for Best Actress. Beasts of the Southern Wild is a stunning film. I am so glad I finally made the time to see it because watching this film was truly one of the most enjoyable experiences for me in recent memory. Have any of y’all seen this film? If so, what did YOU think?

I agree with you 100%, I too reviewed the movie on my blog and virtually said exactly the same things you did. I do agree she will be mentioned at awards time…if she’ll win is another matter…The movie by all means should be seen, as it’s emotional moving…This and “Moonrise Kingdom” are the two best films I’ve seen so far this year.

  3. I was just blown away by this movie and surprised that despite all the critical acclaim people still don’t know about it…

i was moved to tears multiple times during the film and it wasn’t the emotional moments that did it but the powerful imagery and sheer artistic genius that have me overwhelmed time and time again.

and i would also agree with the comment above that Moonrise Kingdom was kickass awesome too! Love to see these amazingly talented child actors carry these two films…
