Last night I had the extreme pleasure of seeing the amazing Azealia Banks LIVE in concert for the first time and let me tell you, the girl was spectacular. Thus far, the only time Azealia has performed in SoCal was at the Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival last Spring … so last night’s concert at The Fonda Theater in Hollywood, CA was her first proper LA show. Dubbed The Mermaid Ball, Azealia headlined a night of live performances from artists like Kingdom, Gita, Charli XCX, Rye Rye (with special guest Robyn) and more. As the final act, Azealia BROUGHT DOWN THE HOUSE! I managed to snap some photos at the show last night, which you can check out below.
The whole night really reminded me of the party kids concerts that the club kids used to throw in NYC back in the 80s. Many people were dressed up in over-the-top costumes (many following the Mermaid Ball theme) and there were more hipsters packed into the venue can I could count. Altho Azealia Banks is straight up SICK hip hop, she really resonates with the hipsters and gays. Here are some of the photos I snapped of last night’s fun:
The costume contest was really fun. The girl who won was dressed as a full on mermaid … she couldn’t even stand up or walk, she had to be carried everywhere. I was so impressed with Azealia‘s performance, she really has an amazing star quality. She is talented, she knows how to work the crowd and she seems to really love being on stage. She’s a very electric performer, it’s hard not to be effected by her exuberance. Here is video of her performance last night of her megahit song 212:
This video isn’t great but it’s better than the video I recorded. I filmed the entire 212 performance perfectly … except I had my finger over the microphone and the sound was completely ruined :( Such a bummer. Still, not even the most perfectly filmed video can do justice to Miss Bank$‘s performance. She slayed last night. I am very much looking forward to seeing her again, hopefully soon. If you get the chance to see her live (I understand she will be in the Europe for the rest of the Summer) you MUST see her live.
I don’t have plans for today, lots of laundry. I’m gonna try and meet up with friends later on … we’ll see. Happy Sunday!!
