First Look: The ‘Oz The Great And Powerful’ Trailer Is Here!

Yes, It's Good.

I’m pretty sure I just saw James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, and Rachel Weisz in a trailer for a The Wizard Of Oz remake to end all The Wizard Of Oz remakes. Some people were wondering why a classic movie needed this treatment. Run, don’t walk and you’ll find out.

Oz The Great And Powerful: First Trailer

Ok, what I looove about this trailer is that the storyline seems almost completely divorced from the original story we know and love and grew up on. When we saw the first poster a little while back I remember learning that the movie would focus on the wizard and that Dorothy would not appear. I thought this was strange, but now I’m thinking that it was a smart move. Too many of us are obsessed with Dorothy; she’s too much of an icon and it’s better to go this route instead.

Was anybody else loving this?! I totally got goosebumps; very dorky of me, I know. I’ll admit that I could be buying into the hype but I can’t fight that right now. I love James Franco! I love that it started off in black and white, then transitioned to color! I love how those flying monkeys came at us in the end! I love! It looks like such a magical story– but totally for adults. And we need a magical story sometime, lol.

Me likey!

OMG I totally thought this was supposed to be animated for some reason ! I was excited but nowwwww Mila and James Franco and Michelle Williams.. I am SQUEEEELING in my cubical! CAN NOT WAIT FOR THIS! much better then a remake of original material! love the new concept and everything to do with this.. Thanks Shannon!

It looks good, but if you read the Wicked books ( all four) its hard to think of the Wizard as “great” or as the Witch as being evil. I’ll have to really put those out of my mind and enjoy this as a different take from what I’ve grown to really love.

  3. Drew

I’m sorry, this looks awful. Like Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’: an overly-CGIed mess.

    • Drew, I didn’t hate Alice in Wonderland! My technique is to put aside my feelings about “originals”– original books, original films– and just take the new product for what it’s worth. I learned that trick after seeing The Color Purple on broadway. I thought Burton’s Alice– on its own– was just fine.

    • Drew

I don’t have issues, per se, with making prequels and sequels and the like based off original products. I don’t hold a sense of false nostalgia for ‘The Wizard of Oz’ or ‘Alice in Wonderland’, so it’s not really a matter of them “ruining the source material”. Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ just had a very dull story that tried to make up for it by being visually attractive, and it ended up not even doing that well. I’m getting the same vibe here from ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’. Even the visuals strike me as almost Burton-esque. I can’t quite place it. Anywho, I’ll probably have to wait for a rental.

    • Drew, I hear you. And Burton has rubbed me the wrong way with some newer stuff as well. But yes, let’s see if this lives up to the hype! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one!

Its a prequal, right? Years before Dorothy?

  5. I am so excited for this movie!!! :)

  6. Lauri

I love prequels, I LOOOOOVE Mila, James & Michelle, I love Oz..basically I’m excited for this, kind of..a lot.

  7. Megan

Mila and Michelle are a dream team, this looks amazing :)

This looks rich. And Franco is starring. What else is there to think about?

  9. Super excited about this. The Wizard of Oz is my all-time favorite movie but I still love the idea of a prequel. The cast is fantastic and I enjoyed the preview.

This definitely looks like something I will love. I have always been a fan of the Wizard of Oz and this looks like it will be a phenomenal prequel to it. Unfortunately, I did not like how the Wicked Witch’s green arm at the end looked animated, or poor CGI, to me. If she’s in any way computerized or such it might ruin the movie for me. Even the Wicked Witch in the original Wizard of Oz was amazing looking for having green skin, and not all the technical stuffthere is these days.

I hope this is nothing like Alice in Wonderland – that was a terrible film IMO. A pointless character enters a world where two queens hate one another. Without her, it would be the same, except with her we get to witness it – yeah cool.

This – two witches are obviously at opposite ends of one another. Let’s hope the Wizard isn’t an excuse for us to see it and the story is more enriching and engrossing.

Visually, it will be stunning though.

So… just checking – does everyone know that L. Frank Baum actually wrote 14 novels in total about Oz and its characters?
This is not a new story – it’s simply newly adapted by Disney.
