In recent years, due to a various number of circumstances, huge portions of Detroit, MI have fallen into abandoned decay and blight. Over the years, many people have come with many different ideas and plans for revitalizing the city or, at the very least, keeping the city from falling into further deterioration. A couple of weeks ago, a crowd-funded plan was announced that is, IMHO, an inventive and hopeful way to turn Detroit’s decay into something profitable and fun. Z World Detroit is a plan that hopes to turn parts of Detroit’s burned out, run down neighborhoods into a thriving zombie apocalypse theme park. If they are able to raise the funds needed, Detroit might become a destination location for zombie and theme park lovers alike.
The Z World Detroit initiative is a radical rethinking of urban redevelopment and Detroit’s well-documented blight and de-population. It turns perceived liabilities into assets that will bring a renewed vitality to a struggling neighborhood. When done right, Z World Detroit would be transformative for part of the city, it would create jobs for Detroiters and become a legitimate destination. While zombies are great, the real neat thing about this project is the potential to inject some life into a forgotten neighborhood – with the opportunity to work with neighborhood groups and organization. In short, Z World Detroit would become part of the neighborhood, the center of the neighborhood, rather than something sitting outside the neighborhood. A big inspiration for this effort is Detroit’s Heidelberg Project, where an artist transformed an east-side street into a massive art installation. This has has a profound effect on that neighborhood and made it a destination.
Honestly, this sounds like a great idea. The Z World Detroit initiative needs to raise $145,000 dollars to make their dream a reality … and I think it’s a worthwhile cause. No one has been able to come up with a better plan for utilizing the burned out areas of Detroit … so why not take those lemons and turn them into a thriving and profitable lemonade stand that can only benefit the city? Immersive experiences like this are amazingly fun and popular. You may recall that I raved about the NYC immersive theater show Sleep No More last year. Z World Detroit, like Sleep No More, will put people IN the action — in the story! I am LOVING this idea and I hope others will, too. It’s gonna take a lot of donations from all of us to help make this plan come to life … er, undeath ;) Let’s help bring zombies to Detroit, shall we?
