Jena Malone Is In Final Negotiations To Play Johanna Mason In ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

Mia Is Out, Jena Is IN

A couple of weeks ago, we learned that the brilliant young actress Mia Wasikowska was “in the mix” for the part of Johanna Mason in the forthcoming sequel film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. At the time, other actresses were also rumored to be “in the mix” for the part but because I was really hoping for Mia to get the role, I didn’t really focus on those other actress. I guess that was my error because today we learn that Jena Malone is in final negotiations to play the part. While I don’t have any necessarily negative feelings on Jena‘s casting, I guess I am bummed that Mia didn’t win the role of Johanna. Blah.

While many in Hollywood are cutting out early for the holidays, it’s reaping day for Jena Malone. The Sucker Punch actress is in talks to play snide tribute Johanna Mason in The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, a key role that will be reprised in the trilogy’s third installment, Mockingjay. Malone has the offer and is in early negotiations for the part, according to sources. The move nixes premature reports that pegged newbie actress-model Zoe Aggeliki as the front-runner to play the ax-wielding former Hunger Games winner from District 7, who aligns with Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) in their return to the arena for an all-star death match. The role requires a mix of wit and physicality. Although Mason enjoys some of the best one-liners in the Suzanne Collins novel, her first appearance finds her stripping out of her tribute costume in an effort to make Katniss uncomfortable. The movie is heading for a late-September start with director Francis Lawrence.

I guess we can’t assume that the role is Jena‘s 100% but if she is in final negotiations, I guess it’s only a matter of time before we learn officially that she will play Johanna. For me, Jena Malone is most remembered as the bratty girl from Stepmom (an excellent movie) but she’s starred in a host of really good films (Donnie Darko, Saved! and The Ruins to name a few) so I guess she’s capable of playing the role. What do y’all think of Jena‘s casting? Do you think she will make an excellent Johanna?

Wow, glad to see that Jena is still working!

  2. Sarah

I like it, Mia was too young I think

  3. Tonya

I can see Jena as Johanna way more than I saw Mia in the role (though don’t get me wrong – I love Mia and would have totally been cool with her as well)

But after seeing Jena in Hatfields and McCoy’s – I am 100% behind this casting if it happens.

  4. Samantha

I love Jena Malone, she was amazing in Saved! I’d rather not remember sucker punch though, that was a horrible, horrible movie.

  5. cmc

She’s an incredible actress, and I can totally see her as Johanna. I like it!

  6. fmx

She looks like chloe sevigny in that pic.

  7. I like Jena for this role.

  8. LOVE Jena – ever since Contact. Great casting, totally capable actress.

  9. Lena

I see Jena more evil as I do Mia, I think it’s a great choice!

  10. Keely

Wasn’t a fan of Mia in the role, but I can definitely see this!

Yes. Yep. I love everything about this. I feel like she can do an amazing job with Johanna’s character. Let’s just get that official word so we can then hear who will play Finnick! C’mon Lionsgate, we are all dying here!

I guess I’m the only one to see this as a big mis-cast. I have to go back and read Johanna’s part again. I could swore she was supposed to be ethnic like Hispanic or light skinned black, and in her mid-30′s, strong. This girl could play crazy Annie but not Johnana. I’m not happy with this casting of Catching Fire at all. They better get Finnick right. I’m starting to lose interest in the movie now.

Johanna was described as a slightly built young woman with wide-set brown eyes and spiky hair. They never specifically stated her age, but most people place her in her early 20′s because the book says she “won the games a few years back”.

  13. Lulu

Uhm.. No. Not a good cast.. :/

  14. Jacinta

I couldn’t see Mia as Johanna no matter how I tried to make it work in my head. I’ve been pretty solidly #TeamKristenBell/#TeamNayaRivera. That being said, I could also see Jena playing the part. I remember first seeing Jena in Bastard Out of Carolina when she was like 11 and she was amazing in that movie. I just recently saw her in the Hatfields and McCoys and noted that she’s still talented. I think this could be good.

Ah, I was so Team Kristen for Johanna! But once Gary was out I was convinced there was no hope for that. Jena seems to be a great fit though.

  15. BradywantsMoore

    I don’t like it… I can’t see it at all!!!

  16. Danielle

As long as its not Kristen Bell… I’m happy.

I think Jena is a smart choice. This picture solidifies it for me: http://hungergamesmovie.org/images/jenamaloneshorthair.jpg

    Couldn’t see Mia either.

  17. Sarah

@Jacinta, her acting in Bastard Out of Carolina at a young age was outstanding. I can honestly see Jena as Johanna, and I hope she lives up to everyone’s expectations.

  18. Ben@pr

I’ve always like her. I wonder why she hasn’t been getting many roles lately? She’s really talented and so not the typical Hollywood starlet.

  19. Casey

I am very happy about this! While I love Mia, I couldn’t see her in the role. I think this is a much better fit! I will keep my fingers crossed for her!
