A couple of weeks ago, we learned that the brilliant young actress Mia Wasikowska was “in the mix” for the part of Johanna Mason in the forthcoming sequel film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. At the time, other actresses were also rumored to be “in the mix” for the part but because I was really hoping for Mia to get the role, I didn’t really focus on those other actress. I guess that was my error because today we learn that Jena Malone is in final negotiations to play the part. While I don’t have any necessarily negative feelings on Jena’s casting, I guess I am bummed that Mia didn’t win the role of Johanna. Blah.
While many in Hollywood are cutting out early for the holidays, it’s reaping day for Jena Malone. The Sucker Punch actress is in talks to play snide tribute Johanna Mason in The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, a key role that will be reprised in the trilogy’s third installment, Mockingjay. Malone has the offer and is in early negotiations for the part, according to sources. The move nixes premature reports that pegged newbie actress-model Zoe Aggeliki as the front-runner to play the ax-wielding former Hunger Games winner from District 7, who aligns with Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) in their return to the arena for an all-star death match. The role requires a mix of wit and physicality. Although Mason enjoys some of the best one-liners in the Suzanne Collins novel, her first appearance finds her stripping out of her tribute costume in an effort to make Katniss uncomfortable. The movie is heading for a late-September start with director Francis Lawrence.
I guess we can’t assume that the role is Jena’s 100% but if she is in final negotiations, I guess it’s only a matter of time before we learn officially that she will play Johanna. For me, Jena Malone is most remembered as the bratty girl from Stepmom (an excellent movie) but she’s starred in a host of really good films (Donnie Darko, Saved! and The Ruins to name a few) so I guess she’s capable of playing the role. What do y’all think of Jena’s casting? Do you think she will make an excellent Johanna?
