James Cameron’s Three ‘Avatar’ Sequels Will Be Shot Consecutively

Avatar-ians rejoice! The sequels are in the works, including a possible Avatar 4. This news comes after Avatar 2 was pushed back from a 2014 release to a 2016 release. Earlier this year James Cameron spoke with The New York Times about his plans for the sequels– including the return of Sigourney Weaver’s character (who dies in the first Avatar). Deets and some douchey-sounding-ish Cameron quotes inside.

In an interview about the Chinese film industry, Cameron told The New York Times, “I’m making ‘Avatar 2,’ ‘Avatar 3,’ maybe ‘Avatar 4.'” He added, “I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them. I’m not interested in taking scripts.”
(Kinda douchey-sounding, right?)

Sigourney Weaver has said that the three films will be shot in the near future, consecutively. The appearance of Weaver’s character (Grace) in the series might seem a bit strange, seeing as how the last time we saw her she was “with Eyway,” the deity of Pandora. AKA ‘dead’. Cameron explained to Vulture that her death is really a non-factor in terms of her appearance in the sequels: “Have you ever heard of nonlinear storytelling? A lot happens on that planet before she shows up, and before Jake shows up to join her.” He went on to say, “she’s there for fifteen years ahead of time. I don’t know, but I wouldn’t jump to conclusions. […] When you have a science-fiction series, a science-fiction franchise, you’re never dead, unless your DNA is expunged from the universe. And then there’s always time travel!”

Ok, so I’m excited to hear about an Avatar sequel that might function as a prequel, but didn’t he sound kinda douchey? Lol. “Have you ever heard of nonlinear storytelling?” sounds like a great way to insult a movie buff. But maybe I’m just being sensitive ;) And Avatar did gross $2.7 billion. I guess he’s allowed to say what he wants or something.

Avatar-ians and Anti-Avatar-ians– care to weigh in on the Avatar sequels/prequels and/or James Cameron’s presumed semi-doucheyness via these quotes?

i’m so confused by jumping from Shannon’s posts to Trent’s posts back to Shannon’s posts.. especially since u have to click to the jump to see who is posting whIch story.. it’s suuuuuuper annoying. a Blog should have ONE VOICE. and now i don’t want to read PINK anymore. Sorry shannon and trent, but this isn’t a news web site.. it’s a BLOGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. that means ONE VOICE. ONE POINT OF VIEW.

    • marc, I hear your concerns, and we’re working on setting it up so that the author’s name appears at the top of the post. I’m sure it must be disconcerting.

But I’m not sure that a blog means “one voice.” PITNB has had two voices for quite some time. The Huffington Post is a blog, and there are millions of other blogs with multiple voices, and with information on a wide variety of topics.

    • @marc — “that means ONE VOICE. ONE POINT OF VIEW.” Nope, sorry ;)

    • Mrs. Clarkson

Trent, people just don’t like change. As someone who’s been reading your blog back to when you were in Detroit and hadn’t even met David (a LONG time!), I can see his point. But clearly, a team gives you a better chance to cover all the celeb news.

    • @Mrs. Clarkson — I totally understand that people don’t like change but as much as I would love to make everyone happy all the time, that’s just not possible.

    • Mrs. Clarkson

Oh, I completely understand. I mean, the evolution of your blog has been pretty fun to watch. Who would’ve thought a writing project would lead to this? I don’t think the site has suffered with the addition of Shannon at all. If anything, it gives you more content. And really, y’all…if there’s something that doesn’t interest you, no one is forcing you to read it. I don’t read every single post! :)

    • @Mrs. Clarkson — Also, Hi btw! Long time no see ;) xo

    • Mrs. Clarkson

Hi to you as well! Yes, I don’t comment often enough. ;) Best of luck with your training.

    • marc

sorry again, Trent, but i totally disagree with you.

the reason i enjoyed PINK so much was because i had grown to appreciate YOUR point of view on news items. that’s what was special about it. i was interested in seeing daily what news stories YOU felt worthy of posting on YOUR web site. I would sign onto PINK to read your particular take on a book, see what you thought of a particular news story, or song, or CD or celebrity. you had an opinion. and a VOICE.

i think shannon’s cool and all, but now this is no longer your BLOG. sorry man, but you lost your voice.

@ Mrs. Clarkson… I’ve been fine with all of the design changes in the past, up to this one… this change erodes the very nature of why i chose to read PINK in the first place.

    • marc

One more thing… To put it in terms you definitely would relate to… it’s like going to a Madonna concert to see Madonna… but what you actually get is a Madonna impersonator. That’s not what you came for!

    • pumba

Yeah, stop hiding the write names until “after the jump”. Who do you think you’re trying to fool. It’s rather immature to force people to click to the next page just so that you could get a few extra clicks. I’m a little sick of all the hip hop posts and hip hop slants to everything and most days, I just wanna read non-Shannon posts. Respect your readers Trent. They are what can make you or break ya

    • @pumba — LOL. No one is trying to fool anyone. As always, you are free to read/do whatever you wish. Make or Break away.

    • Tracy

WOW Pumba! Relax what is your problem? We love Trent’s site and everyone is welcome here.

  • Katie

I thought Avatar was way to long the first time around! I can’t imagine them trying to squeeze out 3 more. But I’m sure they will still makes tons of $$$.

    • Katie, it was pretty epic. And I think with all the waiting, people will go cray for the sequels. Thanks for commenting.

  • JCZ

Avatar was a great movie IMO but, by no means the greatest. The storyline alone renders that impossible, although it isn’t bad, it just isn’t unique. Visually, well it speaks for itself.

The problem is that is became a money making machine and kickstarted the revolution for 3D for all big blockbusters. I don’t see enough interest for 2 & 3 and definitely not for a 4. Neither of them will top the first that’s for sure and I know people said that about Avatar & Titanic – but people who weren’t movie goers saw Avatar, doubters saw Avatar, haters saw Avatar – but not all walked away impressed, it was something that happens very rarely, LotR: RotK and Titanic were probably the only other movies that saw similar success with audiences.

I do like James Cameron, he has an impressive career behind him and whilst he did do a sequel for Terminator and thoroughly improved on the original and whilst he did do Aliens, although he didn’t do the first, Avatar just doesn’t scream franchise or trilogy or sequel to me. I’ll likely see it cause I enjoyed the first but this is purely all about the $$$ which is always the case – but unusual for James as he is usually one to try and push boundaries, take steps & gambles and attempt revolutionary things in film making – this is kinda like, well, a Michael Bay sorta thing.

    • JCZ, lol at ‘Michael Bay sorta thing.’ It will be interesting to see what happens in the sequels– maybe we’ll be surprised.

  • ClaireMichelle

Four sequels to this movie seems incredibly excessive. I’m not even sure that I care to see ONE sequel. It was a beautiful movie, but I can just rewatch the first one for the scenery.

    • ClaireMichelle, “excessive” is a great word here. But I suppose if the fans take it, he’ll make it. Thanks for commenting.

  • BradywantsMoore

Im just über sad that we have to wait till 2016!!!!!! I loved the first one and I adore Zoe Saldana so… I’m still ÜBER EXCITED XD and btw Love You Shannon!!

    • BrandywantsMoore, thank you! I know it’s a long wait, but you can make it :)

  • nicole

three sequels?! good lord, this first one wasnt even that good.

  • Dot

Am I the only person in the world who didn’t see this film? Also how can he make a good storyline for 3 more?

    • Megan

Nope, I have also not seen it and I attend on it staying that way!

  • Janaegal

I didn’t realize there was a sequel to Dances With The Wolves. What storyline will he rip off now?

James Cameron is great at making an aesthetically pleasing film, but I’m never impressed with his movies as a whole, even when I enjoy them for pure entertainment purposes(Titanic, I’m looking at you.)

  • I love Trent and Shannon together. Both make me very happy!

  • Leah

    Is Melissa dunzo?
