Boo! I’ve got some bummer news for all the David Beckham fans out there … we learn today that Becks has NOT been asked to join the English Olympic Soccer Team ;( As you may recall, Becks (as an ambassador for UK sports) was on hand to kick off the festivities for the forthcoming London 2012 Olympic Games last month when the Olympic Torch first arrived in England … but it would appear that that appearance will be the only way David Beckham will participate in the London 2012 Summer Games :(
David Beckham’s Olympic dream is over. As are people’s dreams everywhere of seeing him shirtless during the Games. The soccer star, 37, has been left out of the Team GB squad for the upcoming summer games in London. “Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me,” he said. “I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad. Like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold.” Beckham was an ambassador for the country as the successful bid was made for the games – and he was part of the Olympic flame handover ceremony in May. He is reported to have been told of the decision late Wednesday in a phone call from the coach Stuart Pearce. Earlier this month, Beckham was hopeful he’d make the team after making the original, larger squad.
Aww … this is sad news. If you may recall, Becks didn’t make the English Soccer Team for the last World Cup and now he misses out on participating in the Olympic Games. Altho Beckham has enjoyed a very successful carrer both on and off the soccer field, I can understand how this would come as a major blow to him. That said, I do believe him when he says he will be Team GB’s biggest supporter and I know he will make himself available in any capacity asked of him by anyone even remotely related to the London 2012 Olympic Games. Yes, if he is asked to volunteer as a ticket taker, I’m sure Becks will say yes. I’m kinda bummed that Becks won’t compete in the Olympics, I KNOW he is super bummed … are you?
