First Look: André 3000 As Jimi Hendrix

Filming Has Begun on 'All Is By My Side'

Last month we learned that singer André Lauren Benjamin, better known as André 3000, was cast in the lead role of Jimi Hendrix in a biopic film about the late musician titled All Is By My Side. Today we get our first look at André 3000 in character as Hendrix on the Dublin, Ireland set of the film. As you can see below, André filmed scenes with his co-star Hayley Atwell and, to be honest, the pair do look like characters they portray in the film. Check it out.

As I understand it, All Is By My Side is based on interview materials and does not have the support of the Hendrix estate — which is problematic because no original Jimi Hendrix music can be used in the film without approval by his estate:

When it was announced that André Benjamin -– better known as Outkast’s André 3000 — would be portraying legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix in a biopic, it put to rest years of rumors regarding who would play the psychedelic guitar god on the big screen. The acclaimed rapper-actor-producer is attached to star in “All Is by My Side,” an upcoming biopic based on an original screenplay from John Ridley (“Red Tails,” “Three Kings”). Ridley will also direct the film, which is produced by Darko Entertainment, Subotica Entertaiment and Matador Pictures. “All Is by My Side” is based on interviews and archival materials and “captures the energy, the charisma, [and] the mind-boggling talent of a legend whose musical influence still resonates around the world today,” read Thursday’s official announcement. “At its heart a love story, ‘All Is by My Side’ is about a man growing up, falling in love and becoming Jimi.” Hayley Atwell (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) and Imogen Poots (“Fright Night”) have signed on to co-star. Production is scheduled to get underway in Ireland later this month, but the film has already hit a potentially crippling roadblock: Hendrix’s estate says it has no plans to support the picture. “Various media outlets have recently published accounts that indicate a feature-length Jimi Hendrix biographical film is nearing production. Experience Hendrix, LLC, the family-owned company entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of Jimi Hendrix and administrator of the Jimi Hendrix music and publishing catalog, has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation,” read the lengthy statement issued by his estate. “All Is by My Side” is reported to take place in England in 1966-67, the period when Hendrix recorded his heralded debut, “Are You Experienced.” The lack of original music could prove problematic for marketing a big screen film to audiences hoping to get authentic Hendrix tunes.

It appears they have the look down, I just hope they manage to get the estate’s support so they can get the sound down, too. A film based on the life of Jimi Hendrix has the potential to be a massive success … but only if Jimi‘s music can be heard in the film. Based on these photos, André 3000 looks a lot like Jimi Hendrix. It remains to be seen if the Hendrix estate will, eventually, let him sound like Jimi, too.

I have lived in Seattle all my life and the Hendrix family is an embarrassment to such an iconic musical master. It’s really a shame they way they’ve handled all sorts of things regarding Jimi. Family infighting, greed, and focus on simply money is what has become of his memory. (The local stories around town are embarrassing to hear)

I’ll bet they are holding out for more money. That’s all they care about.

  2. Andre is the perfect choice for this movie.
im sure they’ll get the music – everyone has their price.

I agree. From what I have seen of his acting, I think he has a good honest core to work from. He looks like Jimi, he is musically very gifted, and I think he could do an amazing job.
