Pharrell Williams Teams Up With Awkward Black Girl & Launches New Brand

for the OTHER in you

Pharrell Williams has done a lot of interesting, fabulous wonderful things… that I’ve never really paid attention to. But today all that changes. Because the super-poducer/entrepreneur/N.E.R.D. just won me over by co-signing the most brilliant concept/web show ever, ever, in the history of ever-dome. I’ve been watching Issa Rae‘s Awkward Black Girl since the love of my life put me on to it last year, and it has changed my universe in only good and positive ways. Just days ago, Pharrell introduced his new brand/site/concept, i am OTHER and he made the second season of Awkward Black Girl apart of the movement. I’m beyond pumped! Check out his intro and more ABG madness inside.

Pharrell introduces i am OTHER

Now this part is… awkward. I honestly have no idea how to introduce Awkward Black Girl! It’s an award winning-web series that I used to only watch as a reward to myself. Like, I’d be in the abyss of applying for freelance jobs and I’d tell myself, if you submit one more application, I’ll let you watch Awkward Black Girl. Suffice it to say, the series got me through a really *special* time in my life. Did I mention that it’s a show about the misadventures of an awkward black girl? Ok, well, it is. Issa Rae graduated from Stanford because that’s how she rolls and now her brilliant idea has a cult following of which I am proudly apart (JOIN US…) There’s no way I can really do her justice, so I’ll let the creator and star of the show introduce herself.

Pharrell‘s i am OTHER State Of The Union With Issa Rae

Season 2 of ABG started yesterday so YOU and I both have some catching up to do. Get thee to Awkward Black Girl right now, and if you don’t know why I’m all excited, do catch up on last season’s episodes. It will make you happier than Cold Stone Creamery and Paris and Wes Anderson movies and everything good in life combined. Promise.

Oh, I almost forgot: the awkward moment in the post where I have to say that everyone can enjoy watch the show– awkward and non-awkward people of all races, ethnicities and creeds. Ok, moving on.

Pharrell, well, you got me. I LIKE you. Between Issa Rae and Nardwuar (who is also all over his  i am OTHER site), I’m liking the direction he’s taking.

What do ya’ll think about this N.E.R.D.‘s newest venture? And pleeeeease tell me we have ABG fans at PITNB!

  1. J to the Dine

SO EXCITED to see an ABG post on PITNB. Love this show… but I gotta ask Shannon are you Team Fred or Team White Jay? (P.S. I think you’re a great addition to the PITNB team, I’m usually iffy when a blog hires new writers but I’ve been loving your posts!)

    • J to the Dine… Honestly? Team Fred. BUT I missed the last 2 episodes of last season AND I need to see the new one so I reserve the right to change my mind, cause White Jay was all right, lol.

Thanks for the comment– glad you’re enjoying the posts!

  2. LaToya

Hmmmmm don’t get it….maybe I’ll look for a bit more on line and see if it grows on me….Maybe if I sing my own song….I’m black and relatively normal lol….yes I lol at my own not so funny jokes

    • LaToya WATCH THE EPISODES. NOW. I believe in different strokes for different folks but now with this. No. Everyone will love.

Lol. Thanks for weighing in, you relatively normal black girl, you.

  3. Ria

I LOVE Awkward Black Girl!!! This is such a cool/random/awesome endeavor!

  4. Ria

    Also, Pharrell is sexy.

  5. Trisha

Aw kward Black Girl is the secret reward I share with a co-worker. Whenever a new episode goes up, we close the door to my office (as her rapping is very NSFW). I have loved her since she danced at Fred’s birthday party! Yay Pharrell (and Shannon) for letting people know about this hilarious, so honest & awkward, show!

  6. Sam

I’m definiely awkward and mixed! Where are you from Shannon? (if ya don’t mind me askin’)

    • Sam, I’m very much from Brockton, MA, lol. But my Mom is half Cape Verdean and my Dad is black and Portuguese. So they’re mixed and I’m racially ambiguous. And awkward, sometimes. :)

  7. Nat

Thank you for posting about this! I’ve never heard of it before, and I just watched 6 episodes back to back! Very very funny. (I know this is cliche to say, but as a white brit, I wasn’t sure if it would be for me, but I was completely wrong, so long as you’re awkward, you’re laughing!)

  8. cmc

Awkward and mixed here! I have one of those “terrible” youtube-is-blocked-at-work jobs so I missed most of this post yesterday. Had to come back and revisit :) Shannon, thanks for covering this! I am obsessed with ABG and Issa Rae. Y’all should subscribe to her on Facebook, she’s so funny on a regular basis.

  9. Ella

LOVE! You are such a fantastic addition to PITNB Shannon! I am definitely an awkward black girl! I’m you reminded me this existed. I am so watching all of them right now.

  10. Shavonne

I just finished watching all of the episodes. THANK YOU Shannon!! I wholeheartedly agree with everyone that has said what an awesome addition you are, and here you go proving it again! I’m definitely Team Shannon (but still Team Trent forever and ever <3 )!

  11. Me, Myself, I

AHHHH!!!! So excited to see a post about Awkward Black Girl! Team White Jay ALL DAY! A few of my friends told me about this half way into the first season. “Bitches be trippin….”

I Love you even more now Shannon!! <3

  12. Me, Myself, I thanks for the comment! Team White Jay, huh? You’ll be happy with the new episode then, lol. Truth be told, they make a better couple :)

  13. Asian, male, business guy…it is insanely entertaining
on all levels, the ingenuity is next level.

And the music ROCKS, Doublemint Twins!
