Beyoncé Pays Literary Homage To Her Daughter Blue Ivy On Tumblr

Since she was born on January 7th this year, Beyoncé Knowles and Jay-Z’s baby girl has gotten a lot of attention. Not least because she’s the blessed daughter of two of the biggest stars on the planet, or that she has remained a bit of an enigma (aside from those first pics Bey and Jay released themselves), but her name created instant star quality around her. As soon as her name was publicized it became the talk of the town. What does it mean? Is it symbolic? Where does it come from? Blue Ivy – it’s certainly got a ring to it. The little cherub has one of the world’s most famous monikers. Momma Bey has now revealed what seems to be a homage to her daughter on her official Tumblr account. It also seems to allude to where the name Blue comes from…

Beyoncé posted an excerpt from author Rebecca Solnit’s novel, A Field Guide to Getting Lost, on her Tumblr yesterday — and the recurring message is definitely blue…

The passage reads…

“The world is blue at its edges and in its depths. This blue is the light that got lost. Light at the end blue end of the spectrum does not travel the whole distance from the sun to us. It disperses among the molecules of the air, it scatters in the water. Water is colorless, shallow water appears to be the color of whatever lies underneath it, but deep water is full of this scattered light, the purer the water the deeper the blue. The sky is blue for the same reason, but the blue at the horizon, the blue of the land that seems to be dissolving into the sky, is a deeper, dreamier, melancholy blue, the blue at the farthest reaches of the places where you see for miles, the blue of distance. This light does not touch us, does not travel the whole distance, the light that gets lost, gives us the beauty of the world, so much of which is in the color blue.”

What a beautiful piece of writing! I love how poetic and cryptic Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been about Blue Ivy’s name. There have been a number of different interpretations and suggestions made for the little girl’s name. When she was first named a lot of fans believed that the name ‘Blue’ was symbolic in Jay-Z’s life; “My favorite hue is Jay-Z blue,” he rapped in the song “Go Crazy”), plus he has gone on to release three Blueprint albums in the last decade. Fans also speculated that the name ‘Ivy’ is symbolic for the Roman numeral (“IV”) for 4 -a significant number for both parents- Beyoncé’s birthday is September 4, Jay-Z’s is December. 4, they were married on April 4, 2008, and her latest album is entitled 4.

Now we have another suggestion for the little tot’s name – she could have been named after Rebecca Solnit’s novel, A Field Guide to Getting Lost? We don’t know if Bey was just simply paying homage to her daughter by publishing this paragraph or if she was hinting at where her daughter’s name comes from, but either way it is a very beautiful passage and the color blue takes on so many layers of meaning in this literary piece. The more I read things like this, the more I love Blue Ivy’s name.

I loved this! Beautiful poem. I’m not fully sure why, but I find Beyonce posts more fascinating since she’s become a new mom. Thank you for keeping me/us up to date, I hope they keep coming! :)
