Philip Seymour Hoffman Is Reportedly Up For A Role In ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

Last month we learned that the search has begun for the right actor to portray Finnick Odair in the forthcoming sequel film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Altho we still don’t know which lucky guy will get the part, we are hearing a new bit of reported casting news. Apparently, Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman has been approached to play the role of Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee … which, I have to say, sounds like a brilliant idea to me! Read on for more deets.

Well, the folks at Lionsgate are nothing if not ambitious. With big names like David Cronenberg, Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez all on their wishlist to fill the director’s chair for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” after Gary Ross exited, they’ve since settled on Francis Lawrence. But there’s still some casting to be done on the sequel and they’re taking another big swing and hoping it’ll connect. The eagle eyes at Bleeding Cool have noticed that both Deadline and Variety have dropped the little nugget that the studio wants Philip Seymour Hoffman for the role of Plutarch Heavensbee in the sequel. Who is this character? Since this writer never read the books, to The Hunger Games Wiki we go! Essentially, he’s the new Gamemaker after Seneca Crane gets executed after the events of “The Hunger Games.” This makes us pretty depressed we won’t be treated to more wicked facial hair from Wes Bentley, but we suppose Hoffman isn’t a bad upgrade. At all. But that’s only if he takes the part … And we kind of doubt that will happen. Generally speaking, Hoffman doesn’t go the franchise route, though “Mission: Impossible III” and “Red Dragon” are the exceptions to the rule. We suppose he could possibly be swayed but something tells us the allure of Francis Lawrence isn’t all that great. But then again neither is Brett Ratner, so who knows. And it’s just as likely that the appeal of working with folks like Jennifer Lawrence and Woody Harrelson could counter that. Guess we’ll have to see. But for now, we’ll wait as the studio is still deciding on their Finnick Odair as well. Decisions will come soon as the film is slated to shoot this fall with a November 22, 2013 release date pegged.

OMG, I love this casting choice … er, that is, if Hoffman decides to take the role. Considering some of the other talent that has been cast already, namely Academy Award nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence, I think it’s quite feasible for Hoffman to take the role. He is an excellent actor and I think he would make an amazing Plutarch Heavensbee. At this point, we best not get our hopes up … but I’m totally on board with this casting choice. Let’s hope it works out. There are still a lot of roles that need to be filled. I suspect we’ll spend the Summer watching the Catching Fire roster fill up with equally impressive actors.

I would looove this. And seeing how they are offering the role to someone like PSH leads me to believe that Plutarch’s role will be beefed up like Seneca Crane’s was, and I am fully behind that! Seneca was a great character in the movie, and he was hardly there in the book. I loved what they did with the gamemakers in the first film!

  • Tonya

Love it – hope he takes the role! But like most others, my only real casting question is who will play Finnick (and Johanna too I suppose).

  • Megan

He’s not how I imagined Plutarch but I’d still be delighted if he took the role…he’s Philip Seymour freakin’ Hoffman! :)

  • JillyD

I imagined him to be very tall with dark hair. The hair color can be changed I suppose.

  • Krissy

I really hope this happens! I love SPH!

    • Krissy

Er…typo! That should be PSH. ;)

  • I don’t know anything about the Hunger Games other than what I saw in the first movie, but any movie that gets Philip Seymour Hoffman instantly ups its credibility by like 1000%. He’s a fantastic actor and will be a nice complement to what I’m sure will be a stellar cast.

  • Katie

Not what I pictured…but I love it! He is great in everything.

  • Lacey

Perfect! I absolutely love it. But his hair will have to be darker I think…minor details. Makes me giddy!

  • Maddiej

Perfect! Not at all what I pictures either but when I think of him playing this role it totally makes sense! Hope he goes for it. I’m so excited to hear about other casting choices!

Approved! It would be so great to have him in the movies … still curious about who will play Johanna and Finnick of course :)

  • Meghan

He would be great in this role! I love Hoffman. Keeping my fingers crossed!

  • Tracy

Philip Seymour Hoffman is not what I pictured as the game maker but PSH can do no wrong he will kill the role and up’s the rating for THG….starting to get really excited…

  • Megan

Does anyone else think he could be a good Beetee? Or is he just not old enough?

  • He is such a great actor! This man can do everything, even comedy. Putting a quality actor in a box office film such as Catching Fire is a good move on the part of Lionsgate.
