Back in April, retired actress Amanda Bynes got herself arrested for Driving Under the Influence after she allegedly clipped a police vehicle with her own vehicle on her way home from a bar. Today we learn that prosecutors have decided to move forward and press criminal charges against her. Amanda has been formally charged with DUI and will be hauled back to court to answer for her crime. Amanda remains vigilant in her supposed innocence … she even tweeted about it.
Amanda Bynes has officially been charged with DUI after her arrest back in April — when she sideswiped a cop car and allegedly attempted to flee the scene. Bynes has been charged with one count of misdemeanor DUI — and the D.A. has sought a sentencing enhancement because the actress refused to take either a breathalyzer or a blood test. Bynes has not been charged with hit-and-run. If convicted — with the sentencing enhancement — we’re told Bynes faces a minimum of 48 hours in jail … and a maximum of 6 months. But because of jail overcrowding, it’s unlikely Bynes will ever serve longer than a few hours.
As soon as Amanda learned of the charges, she took to her official Twitter profile to first declare her innocence and then to ask for a little help from President Barack Obama:
I can’t help but laugh at all of you writing fake stories about me. I was not in any hit and runs. I don’t drink so the DUI is false. / Hey @BarackObama… I don’t drink. Please fire the cop who arrested me. I also don’t hit and run. The end.
Um. LOL. It remains to be seen if President Obama will heed her plea to step in and “fire the cop” who arrested her but I’m gonna guess that he prolly won’t be bothered. No, not really. Amanda, I’m sad to say, has really fallen on hard times. Since she announced her retirement a couple of years ago, she’s really done nothing but spend all of her nights partying at nightclubs/bars all over LA. I’ve had the misfortune of running into her at these establishments around town and I have to say, it was only a matter of time before she got busted for drunk driving. In fact, I’m surprised it took this long for her to get arrested. As the report above makes clear, even if she is convicted, she will likely not spend any time at all in jail … but hopefully the criminal charge will wake her up and help her straighten out her life.
UPDATE: Amanda was NOT in court today for her hearing but her attorney was there to enter a plea of Not Guilty:
Amanda Bynes insists she didn’t drive under the influence back in April — pleading “not guilty” today to DUI. Amanda wasn’t in court — her lawyer entered the plea on her behalf.
