A few weeks ago Kristen Wiig made her tearful exit from Saturday Night Live amidst rumors that she isn’t the only one to be parting ways with the show. In April we first heard rumors that Kristen, Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis may be leaving the show, and today we have confirmation that Andy is officially leaving SNL. In an interview with The New York Times, the comedian confirmed reports that he will not be returning to Saturday Night Live in the fall. Read on to see what Andy said about his departure…
“It’s an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life, obviously it’s not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back.” Leaving the show was “one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made,” said Mr. Samberg, who added that he had come to this conclusion with some counsel from Kristen Wiig, an “S.N.L.” veteran who exited the show with a bittersweet Rolling Stones sing-along at the end of the season. “She kept saying it just feels like it’s her time,” Mr. Samberg said. “I connect with that. Something about it just feels like it’s the moment. My contract’s up and I did so much more than I ever thought I would ever even do.”
So, now we know – Andy is indeed leaving. It is the end of an era. Now that Kristen and Andy have confirmed that they are exiting SNL, that just leaves the rumor about Jason. In his interview, Andy did leave open the possibility that he might still contribute occasional shorts or other works to future SNL episodes, but for now his time is up.
SNL has been struggling for years and now that we know that 2 of their 3 main actors are definitely leaving and moving onto bigger and better things, I think the show could be in serious trouble. Losing Kristen and Andy will be a big blow to SNL. I guess now all we have to do is wait to hear from Jason Sudeikis, but my guess would be that he is leaving too.
