Watch: Katy Perry Debuts New Single ‘Wide Awake’ At Billboard Music Awards

Yesterday we saw pics from the red carpet at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards and got to see the moving tribute to Whitney Houston and today we are turning our attention to one of the performances from the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, that of Katy Perry. Katy debuted a new song of hers, Wide Awake, at the music awards alongside a whole bunch of acrobats and aerialists. In case you missed it, check it out here, and see what you think of Katy’s new song performed live.

Wide Awake was written for Katy’s upcoming 3D film, Katy Perry: Part of Me, which is due out July 5th. The performance, before we get to discussing the song itself, recalled spectacles put on by Cirque du Soleil, and featured Katy suspended mid-air, on a swing-type contraption lowered from the rafters. Flanked by aerialists she swung slowly across the stage in a production that was part musical theater and part ballet. Katy looked angelic in her white long dress with rockets and clouds flying past her, in what was obviously a nod to a dream sequence, but she didn’t leave her flying swing post throughout the performance and I found it quite slow, and dare I say it, boring. My favorite part was where she disappeared into the ground. Hmm…

This is obviously a stark contrast from her Part of Me performance at the Grammy’s and in her music video where she portrays a hard edged woman who joins the army. As hard and tough as that performance was, this is almost too soft and slow. I feel it needed to pick up at some point, but it just floated by. What do you think though?

I really wanted to like it, but it fell flat for me too. Loved her “Part of Me” performance, though.

I thought it was visually stunning. I really liked the concept and like you said it was beautiful. However her vocals (like during most of her televised performances) fell flat. I really love the song though. It’s my favorite new track from “Confection.”

    Not her greatest singing performance.

Pink did a similar routine a couple of years ago(Glitter in the Air? I think) and this seems reminiscent but not nearly as good!

  • Hello there! I’m really enjoying the design of your blog. It’s very easy on the eyes, which makes it much more likable to come here and visit more often. Did you hire a experienced artist? Excellent job! If you want, check-out my blog too.

I think Pink needs to show her how it’s really done!

While I love the song so much, when Katy performs I just enjoy her upbeat tracks more, this reminded me of when she sang “Not Like The Movies” it’s just… Meh!

Visually it was stunning, vocally not so much. She just shouldn’t have tried to copy an iconic performance. Katy is not the same caliber as Pink – she has trouble enough just singing live on solid ground. Pink is a performance artist. Katy is not.

Nope – still can’t sing. Thank GOD girlfriend is pretty – cuz that’s her real meal ticket…
