Watch: CBS Releases First Footage Of ‘Sherlock’

Back in February we learned that CBS is developing a new TV series based on the adventures of master detective Sherlock Holmes (starring Johnny Lee Miller) and his partner Dr. Watson which is set in here in the US and features a female Watson (played by Lucy Liu). In March, we got our first look at the new Holmes and Watson on the set of this new series titled Elementary. Today we get to see the first footage from the series in a just-released promo video that takes us behind the scenes of the series. CBS has already announced that Elementary will air this Fall, click below to get a taste of what the show will be like.

ELEMENTARY stars Jonny Lee Miller as detective Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson in a modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD’s most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare – a sober companion, Dr. Watson. A successful surgeon until she lost a patient and her license three years ago, Watson views her current job as another opportunity to help people, as well as paying a penance. However, the restless Sherlock is nothing like her previous clients. He informs her that none of her expertise as an addiction specialist applies to him and he’s devised his own post-rehab regimen – resuming his work as a police consultant in New York City. Watson has no choice but to accompany her irascible new charge on his jobs. But Sherlock finds her medical background helpful, and Watson realizes she has a knack for playing investigator. Sherlock’s police contact, Capt. Tobias “Toby” Gregson (Aidan Quinn), knows from previous experience working with Scotland Yard that Sherlock is brilliant at closing cases, and welcomes him as part of the team. With the mischievous Sherlock Holmes now running free in New York solving crimes, it’s simple deduction that he’s going to need someone to keep him grounded, and it’s elementary that it’s a job for Watson.

Honestly, the series looks like I thought it would look. I had a feeling that Watson would be the level-headed American cop that would be there to help reign in the too-brilliant (and still British) Sherlock. I can’t say I’m too keen on the idea of Liu’s Watson being painted as the “emotional” cop to Miller’s masterfully genius Sherlock … but as long as producers don’t take the easy way out and forge a romantic relationship between the two, I’m cool with this new version of the classic characters. It’s hard to tell if the show will be worth watching based on this video but I’m thus far intrigued. I may tune in a few times to see if the show can tickle my fancy. My fancy is often tickled by Jonny Lee Miller so, I guess we’ll see. What do y’all think of this new series? Does it look like something you’d like to watch?

I think i would like it better if watson wasn’t a woman i really think they are gonna turn it in to a couple and i don’t like that, i heard that the British version of sherlock Holmes is great

  • Ariel

it reminds me of “The mentalist”

  • Katie

Eh, no thanks. I really doubt they will be able to avoid eventually having things get romantic between Sherlock & Watson. I’ll stick with the fab British version of the show.

    • @Katie — “I really doubt they will be able to avoid eventually having things get romantic between Sherlock & Watson” Not if they make Sherlock gay … or Watson for that matter … OR BOTH! GAYS EVERYWHERE! ER, yes you have a point … I will hate it too if they go down the romantic route.

NO NO NO! The British version is superb and this looks like muck.

You might want to correct the error in the article title – the CBS series is called “Elementary” not “Sherlock”. The BBC series called “Sherlock” is fantastic and is similarly a modern-day adaptation of the original stories. Looks like it might have been a big source of inspiration for this upcoming “Elementary” series.

(Big fan of your blog – have been reading for 6+ years and it’s always the first blog I immediately check in the mornings!)

  • The British version IS amazing… not sure if we could get it right.

    • Having said that, I love Miller and would be interested if I hadn’t seen the brilliant UK version!

They redid ‘Being Human’ and the show was an utter dissapointment. Now redoing ‘Sherlock’-why waste time watching when others have done it so superbly?I’m much better off rewatching season 1&2 of the BBC series.Cumberbatch&Freeman ARE Holmes&Watson!

I am also going to through my love in for “Sherlock” the British one. Benedict Cumberbatch does a great job.

I hate that Watson is a girl and the romance that may come along with it. However I would love to see someone make a female Sherlock and Watson. That would be fun too see!
