MTV has announced today that Russell Brand will be hosting this year’s 2012 MTV Movie Awards on June 3rd. This will be Russell’s first time hosting the MTV Movie Awards, but he has done work on an MTV trophy show and MTV Music Video Awards back in 2008 and 2009. What do you think of the British comedian, star of the upcoming film Rock of Ages hosting this year’s fan-voted awards? Thumbs up or down?
“MTV Movie Awards incorporates two of my favorite things. Movies and Awards. If somehow group sex could be involved it would be the greatest night of my life,” Russell Brand said of his hosting gig. “This MTV Movie Awards will be more impressive than ‘The Avengers’ and you won’t have to wait an hour for someone to Hulk out.”
Jesse Ignjatovic, the executive producer for the show, spoke with MTV News about Brand and why he was a clear choice as host. “First of all, I think Russell’s the perfect host for this show,” said Ignjatovic, who previously worked with Brand during his two stints hosting the VMAs. “He’s a movie star. He’s probably one of the most brilliant stand-ups that I’ve seen in his time, and he’s a rock star…
“Whatever we end up creating around him within the show, he brings that danger thing as well,” Ignjatovic said. “We’d love for the show to live there, where you don’t know how he’s going to react to something in the moment. He’s so sharp and witty and on his game that that’s an exciting place to live.”
The star of movies like Get Him To The Greek is known for his humor, but not everyone finds him that funny. It is definitely an interesting choice for the MTV Movie Awards to go with Russell. I’m not sure I quite know how I feel about it just yet. From a promotional perspective, it will be a good opportunity for him to promote his new film, Rock of Ages, which comes out June 15th. MTV has also announced some of their other celeb presenters, and they too have summer movies coming out – surprise, surprise! They include Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone; the Show White and the Huntsman cast, Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth; and Prometheus’s Michael Fassbender.
Russell definitely has that rock n’ Roll vibe down pat, bridging the gap between music and film, and if that is the feel and theme they are going for this year then I guess it does make sense that he is the host. Lets hope that he does actually bring a bit of danger and spontaneity to the show though, as they have said they’re looking for. Russell and ex-wife Katy Perry got together at the 2009 Video Music Awards, so maybe he is out looking for a new wife? LOL! Are you happy about Russell Brand as this year’s host?
