Who Wore What At The 2012 Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala?

by

Last night a huge number of celebs hit up New York City and glammed themselves to the max to walk the staired red carpet for the 2012 Met Gala. The ball is a huge annual event at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art, pretty much always knows as The Met, and has come to be known as fashion’s Oscars. It really is the one night of the year when you get all of Hollywood and all of the biggest names in fashion on the one red carpet together. This year Anna Wintour, Miuccia Prada and Carey Mulligan welcomed the most glamorous people on the planet to the Costume Institute’s annual ball. The theme this year was a celebration of Prada as well as Elsa Schiaparelli, who together comprise the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, “Impossible Conversations.” Check out our MASSIVE gallery of fashion to see who wore what delectable creations and inventions.

The Met Gala is always high fashion and you tend to get huge hits and huge misses, whereas at the Oscars, which is notoriously more conservative, you get less impact. At the Met Gala you’re guaranteed some kind of impact. I always LOVE to see what comes out each year because it truly is a celebration of fashion, in all it’s glory and at time ridiculousness.

The stand out for me this year was Beyoncé who wore a dramatic black lace Givenchy creation which was almost completely sheer from top to bottom. Seriously, you could see the whole shape of Bey’s lower body. It was a lot racier, and ‘in your face’ than we have come to expect from Bey in recent times, which is why I loved it. She totally embraced the theme and vision that is the Met Gala. What do you think of Bey’s outfit?

And just to show you the true spectrum of fashion that hits the Met Gala red carpet…is Kirsten Dunst channeling Mrs Claus?

There was even another Angelina Jolie “leg” moment by model Anja Rubik.. Ouch!

Biggest fashion fail of the night IMHO was Marc Jacobs. What was with the black lace jumpsuit and white boxer concoction? Was he trying to be ironic?

  • rachel

i’m afraid that a group firing of the evening’s stylists is in order. yikers!

  • So Kirsten Dunst is obviously not the one underneath where her name is written above, but who is?… I can’t for the life of me figure it out! I wanna say maybe it’s Florence, but I really don’t know.

    • @ Kent – yes, that is Florence Welch!

last night was one of the worst Met Gala red carpets i’ve ever seen. thought there were some good outfits (like lea michele – minus her hair) – i think this is the first time where there wasnt that one outfit that no one could hate.

and im pretty sure, im the only person who didnt like beyonces dress.

I don’t really like any of the dresses.. they all look ‘meh’ to me!

  • Krissy

I love Emma Stone’s dress. I am still working on looking at all of the dresses, though.

  • Tracy

I believe the actresses do not have a say in what they wear. With that said OMG! There were just soooo many bad dresses. Beyonce got her body back but, her dress looks like something you were when you want to make another baby. It belongs in the bedroom for sexy time. The rest of the pictures HOT HOT messes…

  • Yelena

I personally hated Beyonce’s dress. It maybe would have worked if her spanx actually matched her skin tone. It’s so distracting! She looks like a swiffer!

    • LV

      YES

  • Hampton

Oh my nerves! Diana Vreeland and Mme. Schiaparelli would turn over so to speak. Well you can tell whoms Zoe dressed the rest of the crowd looked they were put together by scotch tape. no undergarmens..Cameron Diaz is much tooold 9but nice dress) and Beyonce lloked like she was on the stroll up 8th Ave. most of the celebs coulduse a bit of fashon advce fromRupauland the ‘Girls’if they wanted to look over the top. The real winners will appear on the pages of new york Social Diary. As forMarkJacobs whose career is over, Bellevue awaits.

  • Charlotte

Love Christina Ricci. SJP conjures up her best Little House on the Prairie. Heidi Klum… seriously? Beyonce = wretched: lace curtains meets Snuffleupagus.

  • AmandaPalmina

it seems that Marc Jacobs was trying to make fun of the ridiculousness of sheer outfits…i wonder if he knew what Beyonce was wearing, if he did then it’s even more hilarious. Beyonce looks ridiculous she needs to get over herself

  • Cynthia
