Pretty much everyone expected The Avengers to do very well at the box office but early in the week, there was talk that the film might enjoy the biggest US opening weekend box office of all time. All across the country, fans lined up at movie theaters in every city to see the “biggest superhero film of all time”. Today we learn that, yes, The Avengers did very well at the box office … and yes, the film enjoyed the biggest opening weekend ever … taking in over $200 million dollars in just 3 days.

To say that “Marvel’s The Avengers” had a great weekend at the box office would be a drastic understatement. “The Avengers” — in which the powers of Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Thor and the Hulk combine to save the world from the villainous Loki — was virtually the only movie anyone saw this weekend. It earned a total of $200.3 million, easily beating out “Harry Potter” as the biggest debut ever. Just to put things in perspective, the weekend’s second grossing movie was “Think Like a Man,” which earned a relatively meager $8 million.
Yes, The Avengers set the new opening weekend box office record … but the money is still being counted. When it’s all said and done, it looks like the film will take in around $207 million for the weekend (plus $447.4 million at the foreign box office):
Disney just announced that Marvel’s The Avengers made as much as $56.8M for Sunday’s gross. That would put the Disney film’s 3-day record-breaking opening weekend’s domestic cume about $207.1M and its foreign total at $447.4M for a global $654.5M. But only Monday actuals will tell the final tally.
Not only is this great news for comic book movie fans but I think it proves to the world that Joss Whedon — who directed and wrote the film — is a serious force to be reckoned with. Whedon fans have known for YEARS how amazing a writer/director Joss is … and now the rest of the world knows it too. I saw The Avengers for the second time on Saturday and the first thing I heard when the film was over was someone saying, “They HAVE to get Joss Whedon to direct the sequel” … and I wholeheartedly agree. Now that Joss has proven himself, I think Hollywood will take him more seriously … and that means more fantastic entertainment for us in the future. Congratulations Joss on a job very well done. Biggest Opening Weekend Ever! Wow.

After seeing Cabin in the Woods, I knew Avengers would be unbelievable! Saw it twice this weekend. I LOVED it!
WOW!
I am so glad everyone can now relish in the genius that is Joss Whedon!
My husband and I saw it twice over the weekend, I’m not exactly a comic book fan but as a crazed Buffy fan I wanted to see what Joss put together and was SO impressed. My husband is a die hard comic fan too and said it was the best movie he’s ever seen.
Has there been any word on a sequel yet, Trent?
@Elyse — I think we can 100% count on a sequel … if they are smart, they’ll let Joss write/direct again ;)
Good thing it made $200M because there were at least that many people working on this film. I bet it still hasn’t even broken even.
im not seeing this until this friday…i feel so left out lol
@nicole — It’ll be worth the wait … and make sure you stay until AFTER ALL of the credits roll at the end.
@Trent – oh thanks for the heads up!
Trent I’m disagreeing with you and I’m sure you will agree. Joss didn’t prove himself with The Avengers… He already had!!!
I’m glad he has finally found major commercial success that producers and what not what will look for now and find even MORE appealing!
It’s a shame it’s taken a large franchise like this to give him that, but any Joss success is welcomed in my books which would mean more work being offered to him or any originals forms of work likely to be given the OK!
RIP Harry Potter – but at least it got a record temporarily on its sad departure.
who cares money is money have you idiots forgotten that the average ticket price is about 8 bucks in 2012 while in 1969 for example an average movie ticket was $1.42 and Butch Cassidy was the first movie ever too make more than 100,000,000 at the box office which in todays money would be nearly 600,000,000 which means the lead actor would get nearly 60 million in back end profits
I somewhat agree with your opinion. I LOVED The Avengers. Just a very fun and funny movie, filled with oh, so much eye candy. Where did they get so many sexy and svelte people together in one place? Seriously, I would hit every single person in that movie, even the extras. Haha… anyway, nice blog. :)
