Selena Gomez Will Duet With The Late Selena Quintanilla

The technological resurrection of Tupac Shakur at the 2012 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this year has inspired a new trend in resurrecting other dead celebrities for financial gain. The Jackson brothers are considering going on tour with a Hologram Michael Jackson and the 90s rap group TLC are considering the same thing with their late member Lisa Left Eye Lopes. Today we learn that pop star Selena Gomez is planning to record a duet with the late Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla for an upcoming tribute album. I don’t think there will be holograms involved but this Selena & Selena duet really shows that dead celebs are really hot right now.

Since Tupac Shakur’s hologram performance, it seems like anything is possible when it comes to the music world! Selena Gomez is the latest singer who’s getting a chance to work with a beloved (and no longer with us) music star—the original Selena herself. Gomez is one of the stars who recorded a song on Enamorada De Ti, a new tribute album honoring the late Latin songstress. “She did an amazing job,” Selena’s brother, A.B. Quintanilla, told E! of Gomez at today’s Billboard Latin Music Awards in Miami. “I had the opportunity to talk to her, we did some awards together and I had never met her before in person. And I took the opportunity to go say hello to her. And I want to thank her for coming onto the album.” “She was named after my sister,” Quintanilla continued. “That’s pretty awesome. Selena with Selena. We want to thank all the Selena Gomez fans that have actually, they’ve been really, really at it just spreading the word. Hard core fans.” He added of Gomez, “Selena, this message is to you. I didn’t get to work with you but I’m going to work with you on your Spanish album. You better call me!” … “I was completely honored when they asked me to be on the tribute CD and when I went into the studio to record they actually had her vocals in the booth that she was in, so I felt like she was singing right next to me,” she said. “It gave me chills! It was incredible and it was a great experience and it was a great song.”

Unlike the creepy (yet, fascinating) holograms, this duet seems less … seamy. Folks have been dueting with dead singers for years. I am about as surprised that Selena Gomez was asked to duet with the late Selena Quintanilla as I am that there is yet ANOTHER Selena tribute album on the way. I’m a HUGE fan of Selena and I’m a growing fan of Selena Gomez so … I’m totally down with this duet. I must admit, I’m a sucker for a good Selena tribute album (Heaven knows there are enough of them) so I will definitely be picking this up. I am quite interested in hearing Selena duet with Selena … are you?

I’m with you. No, no, no. Just NO.
It already bothered me but now there are SO many people talking about having this person and that person ‘reanimated from the dead’ for a performance. It’s extremely annoying and it bothers the hell out of me because I never want to see this done with Jim Morrison or Kurt Cobain – or anyone else. It seems disrespectful to me somehow.

  • Actually that album was released already…. And it happened WAY BEFORE the Tupac hologram…
