Back in December we learned that Tom Cruise has expressed interest in returning to the role of Maverick in a rumored sequel to Top Gun. Today, we are hearing from Paramount Studios that Top Gun 2 is very likely going to become a reality. Speaking about the movies that will be coming from the studio in the next few years, Adam Goodman confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that plans are definitely in the works for a Top Gun sequel. Do you feel the need, the need for speed again? Get ready, ‘cuz you’re gonna get another Top Gun fix soon.
When asked about the possibility of another Mission: Impossible film, Goodman replied: “We’ll likely make a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise first. Jerry Bruckheimer would produce, with Tony Scott returning to direct. All parties are moving ahead. We’ve hired Peter Craig to write the script.”
In the interview, the Top Gun sequel question wasn’t even asked … Goodman offered that information himself out of the blue. This tells me that by going on the record, he wants to put the word out there that the Top Gun sequel is on the way. I honestly don’t know how I feel about this. As a big fan of 80s nostalgia, I think I *may* enjoy a sequel. But it’ll have to be done properly. I know Tom Cruise is no fool … he will not appear in a film that he doesn’t believe will be a success. I guess we’ll have to learn more as plans move forward but … it looks like Top Gun 2 is a serious go. Are you excited … or scared?
