Scarlett Johansson Shows Off Her New Tattoo

Scarlett Johansson got herself a new tattoo and she is reluctantly showing it off. As you should be well aware by now, Scarlett is the lead female star of the upcoming superhero film The Avengers and among the featured characters in The Avengers is the Nordic superhero god Thor. Scarlett’s new tattoo is a clear nod to the god of thunder Thor because she got Thor’s hammer Mjölnir tattooed on her wrist. BUT, there appears to be a second meaning to her new tattoo. Click below to get a better look at her new ink and see for yourselves.

We first noticed Scarlett Johansson’s new wrist tattoo, which she cleverly tried to hide during the press tour of her latest flick “The Avengers,” but thought nothing of it until recently when one great camera shot focused in on the tiny inscription. What did ScarJo choose to ink on her wrist? “I [Heart] New York,” of course. From the distance, the black ink tat on her right wrist is fashioned to look like a bracelet with one hanging charm. But up close and personal, we see that ScarJo shows off her love for hometown city and current residence. The stunning actress initially tried to disguise her new ink by wearing an actual bracelet on top of the tattoo, making it appear as if she were wearing two bracelets instead of one. The wrist tattoo is not the first for Johansson. She also has an anklet with the letter A on her right ankle, and an etching of a colorful sunrise on her left arm. Her latest is our favorite, but maybe we’re just partial to New York.

Yes, it clearly reads I <3 NY on the tattoo but without question, the tattoo is of Thor’s hammer Mjölnir:

So while ScarJo clearly loves NY, she appears to also be interested in the symbols protective qualities. For centuries, people have worn Thor’s hammer as a sign of strength. I’m certain her decision to have this particular image tattooed on her body has nothing to do with the Thor in The Avengers and more to do with the ancient Pagan belief in the Nordic god Thor … at least, I hope that’s the case. A lot of people get tattoos that they don’t even understand. It is my hope that this tattoo is Scarlett’s way of saying I Love NY … and I respect the ancient power of the Nordic god Thor and the Nordic culture overall.

    It’s very cute! I like it! :)

  • I thought she was getting this tatoo as a way of saying that she’s interested in Chris Hemsworth, but then I remembered he’s married and his wife just had a baby ;)

  • VV

    Oh dear. That’s awful.

  • Mr. Gyllenhaal

I like it but I love her!!! She looks amazing!

As tattoos go, it’s not the worst I’ve seen. It’s delicate. But why not just wear a bracelet? At least you can remove it.

  • Brittany

This is really awkward. I would think as an actress this would be a horrible place to have a tattoo.

  • Natasha

Shoooz, that’s almost as bad as one of Megan Fox’s tats.

  • nicole

i dont hate it…but i think it would have been better around the ankle

  • Spitzi

I like it but yeah…as an actress wouldn’t this be a hindrance to getting parts? A bit awkward to cover up with make-up.

The tattoo is a Mjolnir, Thor hammer. Not a simple tattoo on her left arm (with i love NY inside).

Scarlett spell her last name right, just like the Swedish surname should be written with two S (Johansson) thereof tattoo is a Mjolnir. Punk ckeck your facts befor you type dirt

A Swedish descended from Vikings, Tom.

Danes, Swedes, Norwegians, Germans, the Dutch, and Icelanders had the same gods; the Aesir and Vanir.
