Russell Crowe Will Play Noah In Darren Aronofsky’s Biblical Biopic

Darren Aronofsky, the director who wowed the world with his 2010 film Black Swan, has begun preproduction work on a new filmed based on the biblical character Noah. As you may know, Noah was the man chosen by God to build an ark big enough to house 2 of every living animal on Earth so that they and mankind could be saved during the apocalyptic flood created by God as punishment of man’s wicked ways. Russell Crowe, an actor notorious for his own wicked ways, has been cast in the role of Noah. Irony or perfect casting?

Paramount Pictures and New Regency Productions jointly announced today that Academy Award®-winner Russell Crowe has been cast as Noah in Academy Award®-nominated director Darren Aronofsky’s feature film of the same name. Paramount will release the film on March 28, 2014. Said Aronofsky, “I’d like to thank Paramount and Regency for backing my team’s work to breathe new life into the biblical epic. I rejoice that Russell Crowe will be by my side on this adventure. It’s his immense talent that helps me to sleep at night. I look forward to being wowed by him every day.” NOAH is a close adaptation of the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. In a world ravaged by human sin, Noah is given a divine mission: to build an Ark to save creation from the coming flood. The screenplay was written by Aronofsky and Ari Handel and revised by Academy Award®-nominated screenwriter John Logan (GLADIATOR, HUGO). Scott Franklin and Aronofsky of Protozoa Pictures, along with Mary Parent of Disruption Entertainment, will produce the film. The film will be executive produced by Ari Handel (BLACK SWAN), Arnon Milchan of New Regency and Chris Brigham (INCEPTION, ARGO). The movie will begin shooting this July in Iceland and New York.

As a fan of the film The Ten Commandments, I am actually looking forward to a new feature film based on a story from the Bible. I am quite encouraged that Aronofsky is not only writing this film but that he will be directing it as well. He is truly one of my favorite directors and I have no doubt that his Bible epic will be … well, epic. And, despite Russell Crowe’s bad boys ways, I think he will do a fine job with the role of Noah. Crowe is a very talented actor and I’m certain he will shine in this new film. I’m hearing that Liam Neeson may also be cast in Noah so … this new film sounds pretty rad already.
