Mattel has released a Kate Middleton Barbie, a President Barbie and is planning the special release of a bald Barbie … today we learn that they are also readying the release of a Katniss Everdeen Barbie to capitalize on the popularity of The Hunger Games. Now, Barbie fans can add a Katniss Barbie to their collections … should they ever want a doll that is capable of killing all their other dolls. Isn’t that neat?
EW is happy to share the exclusive first look at the iconic heroine after being filtered through Mattel’s Barbie-making factory. This Katniss isn’t wearing her reaping dress — instead, and rather fittingly, she’s wearing what she wore into the Games and comes complete with a miniature mockingjay pin, bow and arrow, forest-tromping boots, and that one, plump braid … [says] the doll’s … designer, Bill Greening, “I chose to dress her in the outfit she wears during the games, since this is where all the non-stop action takes place and is instantly recognizable by fans,” says Greening of the Katniss Barbie. “Of course, she wears her mockingjay pin proudly on her lapel.” Designers at Mattel created Katniss’ look by going straight to the source and examining the actual costume that Jennifer Lawrence wore in The Hunger Games. “Hopefully Hunger Games fans can appreciate the attention to detail,” Greening says.”The doll’s minimalistic style and details — such as her loosely braided hair and makeup-free look — also really embody the heroic character Katniss.” Of course, it took a true fan to create such a doll. “I am a huge Hunger Games fan and loved all three books, so it was truly an amazing experience for me to be able to design the Katniss Barbie doll,” Greening says. “I think it really pays tribute to Katniss and The Hunger Games.” The Hunger Games‘ Katniss Barbie will be available everywhere in August and for pre-order starting today at 12 p.m. ET at BarbieCollector.com and various other online retail outlets.
Well, you know a character has reached a new level of pop culture importance when Mattel decides to make a Barbie doll version. I’m certain that Hunger Games fans will be snapping up these dolls as quickly as they can … just like the Twilight fans did when the Bella Swan Barbie was released. Mattel knows how to capitalize on a hot craze. I deffo see the appeal of a Katniss Barbie doll. I’m not saying I’M going to get one but … yes, I see the appeal. Does this look like a doll that you would like to add to your collection?
