On Wednesday probate documents were released, eight months after Amy Winehouse’s tragic death last July. Her parents, Mitch and Janis Winehouse, are set to inherit her entire estate, which has been reported to be worth $4.66 million. Amy hadn’t drawn up a will before she sadly passed away, and therefore according to probate law, her parents inherit her estate by default.
In January we saw pictures from the controversial Jean Paul Gaultier fashion show, which paid tribute to the late Amy Winehouse. Soon after that we heard from Amy‘s father Mitch Winehouse, who was furious at the fashion tribute, calling Gaultier‘s decision to craft a fashion collection inspired by his late daughter as in “bad taste”.
A lot of people were upset at Mitch’s reaction to the Gaultier incident because he has been described as being a little Michael Lohan-esque, and openly criticized for being money scamming and devious. The latest news about him and his wife inheriting his daughter’s entire estate is sure to bring up those issues and sentiment all over again. Squabbling over money after a death is always distressing. The silver lining in this story is that at least there was no fight, or at least not yet. But, I think it would be hard for anyone to argue that her parents shouldn’t have got their daughter’s estate by default. The whole thing is still so sad…. Amy was a massive talent and her death was a real loss to the music industry IMHO.
