Darren Criss Has Been Offered The Hosting Gig On ‘The X Factor’

Big news on The X Factor front. While we wait to find out if Britney Spears will sign on to host the upcoming second season of the show, we are learning today that Glee star Darren Criss has been offered the hosting gig on The X Factor. The former host, Steve Jones, was axed last year when the decision was made to get rid of him along with judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul. Today we are learning that Criss has been offered the hosting job … and he has already made a decision. Click below to find out if Darren Criss will be the new host of The X Factor.

Darren Criss is a very wanted young man. Not only is he one of the biggest stars to be hatched by Glee, but his last year included starring on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and filming a movie, Imogene, with Kristen Wiig and Annette Bening. And now I can exclusively reveal he was recently offered the hosting job at The X Factor … Mr. Criss politely declined the gig, according to a source. The Fox show’s original host, Steve Jones, was dumped for the upcoming second season as were judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger. I’m told Criss decided not to join Simon Cowell & Co. because of his busy schedule, plus he’d rather spend his time singing and dancing than hosting. “They were after him,” a show insider said. “But there’s no way he could have done it with everything he has going on.” Reps for Criss and Fox did not comment for this story.

Aw man … what a bummer. I think Darren Criss would’ve made a fantastic host on The X Factor. It’s a shame that his bizzy schedule wouldn’t allow for him to take this job cuz I think he has the right kind of charisma and charm to really excel in a role as TV host. Now that Darren has said no, we have to wait until another name is revealed as possible X Factor host. Now that we know they are going for a Darren Criss type of host, do any of y’all have any guesses on who they might go after next?

  • I’m glad he didn’t take it! I think he will have much bigger success in Hollywood as a broadway star, actor, and singer/songwriter. I don’t want him to get stuck hosting a show! He is so unbelievably talented and creative.

    • @Diana — Ryan Seacrest started out as a TV host and managed to work out a pretty stellar career.

    • Kiki

Ryan Seacrest actually started out as a radio DJ, so hosting a nationally broadcast TV show was a big break for him. This wouldn’t be a break for Darren Criss – he’s already been very fortunate to find success on TV and Broadway.

I agree Diana. And Darren is an actor…which is very different from a host or DJ where you are playing yourself. It would give him more attention, but it would also probably make casting directors look elsewhere when they are casting film or scripted tv roles.

  • Yes, yes, stellar career of course but I don’t know if hosting X-Factor would help lead Darren Criss down the singing/acting route. :)

  • ClaireMichelle

I am glad he didn’t take it simply because it will leave more room for him to do more stuff in his music career, but I have no doubt in my mind that he would have slayed this hosting gig! He is so personable, he would have been perfect.

  • Mr. Gyllenhaal

    He is soooooo cute!!

  • ChristineLA

This is the right move for him. A hosting gig really just does not make sense to me, although I have no doubt he would have been a fantastic host. Darren Criss has so much talent oozing out of his pores, I really don’t want him to waste a minute announcing what America’s choice is, or whatever.

I’m glad he didn’t take it. It doesn’t seem like a necessary step for his career.

  • I think he’ll have more opportunities to create his own career this way but I also think those hosting gigs should be filled with industry veterans who’ve endured the full run of career ups and downs. He should revisit this in a good ten, fifteen years when he has a fuller breadth of experience and wisdom to offer contestants.
