‘The Carrie Diaries’ Casts Carrie

Big news today from the makers of the Sex and the City prequel TV series, The Carrie Diaries, because they have announced who will be playing the role of Carrie Bradshaw. The role has been given to new, young actress AnnaSophia Robb. It is a big role for a young girl as she will be stepping into the shoes (literally – will she wear Manolo Blahniks?) of the older Carrie, Sarah Jessica Parker, who made that role so enormously famous. A few weeks ago we heard that they had cast Carrie’s sister, Dorrit, with the young, Stefania Owen. The casting of Carrie is big deal though, and no doubt something the producers of the show thought long and hard about. So, who is AnnaSophia Robb?

18 year old AnnaSophia is perhaps best known for playing the role of Violet Beuregarde in the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film with Johnny Depp. You may also recognize the pretty blonde from Soul Surfer, the shark-attack movie. She is still a relatively new kid on the block, and has just scored what could be the role of her career. Huge congratulations to AnnaSophia, she must be thrilled to have scored this role. So many people adore and idolize the adult Carrie, that she would know she has big shoes to fill. Being 18 though, I don’t think AnnaSophia would have grown up on SATC when it was actually still on TV…. hmmm…

The Carrie Diaries, which Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz are executive producing, follows a teenage Carrie Bradshaw as she comes of age in Manhattan in the 80’s. I’m with Trent on this one – as a huge SATC fan, I’m not sure how I feel about this new TV series. We all got to know Carrie as an adult for so many years, through so many different experiences, that now getting all this new information about her as a young girl is quite daunting. Even just looking at the lovely and very pretty AnnaSophia is making my heart jump a little. Is this really Carrie? I have to say though, it was a good move going with a new young actor. I am definitely going to try put this behind me and tune in to watch the new show, to at least give it a chance. Such a Carrie fan couldn’t not? I just hope I love it, but I’m nervous I will be disappointed.

What do you think of the casting of Carrie?

She is also in Because of Winn Dixie and the Rode to Terabithia. I have loved her in everything I have watched her in.

      Bridge* not rode. *facepalm*

there was never a mention of having a sisteron SATC. In fact, interestingly, with the exception of a single episode r of SATC where CArrioe mentioned not having a good relationship with her father, there is famously never any mention of any family for CArrie – not even at her wedding! I always thought that was an interesting move on the part of the writers

I don’t think I would characterize her as a “new” actress – she’s been around for a while and I know her from many movies. Anyway, not sure how she’ll be, since my memory of her is as a child and this is more of a grown-up/teenage role. Should be interesting.

I think fans of SATC are comparing this “prequel” to the t.v. series. The t.v. series was based on Candice Bushnell’s book. I’m sure they made changes that better suited their vision. I think this series is going to closely follow the books. It’s not a prequel to the t.v. series.

I don’t hate this casting choice, but I’m not super excited…I’m very interested to see how she does and what the show is like. I don’t watch Gossip Girl, but I heard what they’re going for. I’m actually hoping for something a little quirky/campy (Glee), a lot sophisticated/higher humor(the original SATC).

Couldn’t they find an actress who resembles Sarah Jessica Parker in the least? I mean, what happened to Carrie between the prequel all the way to the present to make her look, well, like Carrie? Hardcore drugs/plastic surgery in Mexico?! COME ON.

  • I don’t think they had to hire someone who looks exactly ilke SJP but I think part of what made Carrie lovable/identifiable was that she was not your typical beauty, IMHO. SJP has a unique look which is beautiful and while this actress is definitely gorgeous, I don’t know if looks wise she fits the Carrie persona we all love.

Again, this is going to tell a different story than the HBO series, so I’ll wait and see.

I read the Carrie Diaries out of sheer curiosity being a huge SATC fan and found myself really enjoying the writing and reading it in one weekend. It chronicles her life in small country town in the 80s, rebelling against her parents, fighting her sister, choosing the wrong guy and then moving to Manhattan…which i noticed they re-created a little in the second SATC movie with the flash back of Carrie on the sidewalk with all her bags looking bewildered in 80s clothes. It will be interesting to see how they bring the book to life on the small screen…

Ok, AnnaSophia Robb is not a “new kid on the block.” She’s been acting in many years alongside Jeff Daniels in 2005’s Because of Winn-Dixie, then Bridge to Terabithia, THEN she was in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

    • @Feliciao — Just because she was in films doesn’t mean she’s not a “newcomer”. AnnaSophia is largely unknown by most everyone so, yeah, I’d say she’s a new kid on the block. This role will make her much more well known.

Just no!!! An iconic character played by another actress in a different place and date. Isn’t this series going to the CW? I’m sure this one will be a success just like most of their series *read with sarcasm*
