Sacha Baron Cohen Spills Ashes On Ryan Seacrest In Orchestrated Oscar Red Carpet Stunt

Last week there was a bullshizz story going around that actor Sacha Baron Cohen had been BANNED from attending the 84th annual Academy Awards for fear that he might cause controversy either on the red carpet or on the show itself. Seemingly — as if he expected to be BANNED in the first placeCohen in character as General Aladeen from his film The Dictator released a video message in response to the alleged ban. Then, miraculously, the Academy relented and told Cohen he could walk the Oscar red carpet. AND TO EVERYONE’S SURPRISE (but not really), he pulled a stunt on Ryan Seacrest on the Oscar red carpet last night by accidentally pouring the “ashes of Kim Jong-Il” all over him. SHOCK! Click below to watch the orchestrated farce, in case you missed it the first time.

I find it very hard to believe that anyone at ALL believed even for one second that this whole sham wouldn’t turn out exactly as it did. I think we all knew from the very start that the banning was planned to help Sacha Baron Cohen promote his new film. If it weren’t for the initial ban, we wouldn’t have known to be on the look out for last night’s planned stunt:

As far as stunts go, it wasn’t even a very good one. I’m utterly convinced that not only was the Academy in on the joke but so was Ryan Seacrest (amazingly, Ryan had an exact Burberry tuxedo ready to go, which he immediately changed into). I don’t think this stunt did a thing for getting me interested in seeing The Dictator, mainly cuz I’m kinda over SBC’s schtick … but how about you? Did this week-long elaborate stunt manage to get YOU interested in watching the film?

You think Ryan was in on it? Hmm, I didn’t think so. He seemed like he was incredibly pissed off but was trying to act like he was a good sport about it all. He would not let it go for the longest time, too. It seemed like he was not a fan of this prank in any way. And I can understand why. It was incredibly lame. The only thing that made the stunt a little funny was when Tina Fey took pictures “paying her respects” to Kim Jong-Il.

    • @ClaireMichelle — “You think Ryan was in on it? … He would not let it go for the longest time, too” Yep, which is exactly why I know he was in on it ;) The lady doth protest too much.

Ohmygosh. Sorry for that novel of a comment!

    • @ClaireMichelle — LOL! No worries xo

SBC is smarter and wittier than this.

  • i don’t know… ryan looked EXTREMELY pissed and it got super awkward there.

  • Lou

Sasha Baron Cohen’s schtick is getting old and really hasn’t ehld up too well. Boooring.

    • Lou

      Help up too well. Duh.

    • Tracy

Yes…totally agree. I don’t know if Ryan was in on it or not be it was terrible and in poor taste and not funmy. Sacha has to get a new act.

  • Teri

I whole-heartedly believe Ryan was in on it. The whole thing was lame…if Ryan was so surprised by it he certainly didn’t have much of a reaction other than standing there and politely smiling while he allowed Cohen to keep spilling on him. Sorry I don’t buy it. I saw a headline that Ryan was “tweeting” the day before about the fact that he was going to interview the “Dictator”.

I thought it was funny..Stupid funny, but still funny..I also didn’t think Ryan was in on it, but even if he was, it was nice to see someone dump on him..Literally.. ;) Did anyone notice the guy holding the flowers after SBC was ushered off? He went over and it looked like he grabbed the top of the urn and put it in his pocket..It was just..Odd..

I like SBC but have no interest in any of his character movies. I enjoyed him in Talladega Nights, Sweeney Todd and Madagascar, but didn’t bother with Borat, Bruno and now The Dictator.

  • Liz

Yawn! I have seen the whole movie from the preview.

  • Desdemona

It doesn’t make me want to see the movie but I thought it was funny mainly b/c of Ryan’s reaction. I don’t think he was in on it. But I WAS surprised at how long it took him to get over it, and now that you mention it has me thinking. He is SO professional and uber-smooth…why did he not just bounce back from it? Hmmm…

i actually thought it was kind of funny! i gotta give props to the 2 girls standing besides SBC. if i were one of them, i would definitely burst out laughing. they looked a little shocked and quickly composed themselves though. i hope SBC gave them bonus $ for remaining in character despite the hilarity of the situation!
