Who Won At The Indie Spirit Awards?

It's Not Just About The Oscars...

Today is all about The Academy Awards, the biggest awards show of the year. As the major red carpet is rolled out, we shouldn’t forget that the Indie Spirit Awards took place last night. In true Oscar fashion, it sadly casts a shadow of the smaller, independent awards, so lets look at who took home the penultimate trophies the day before the “big day”. Do you think the indie winners have any bearing on the Oscars?

Seth Rogen hosted the Indie awards, and some of the major winners were as expected, while others were more of a surprise…

Michelle Williams took home the award for best female lead for her role as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn. Michelle won the award at the Golden Globes and the big question is, whether she will take home the gong tonight at the Academy Awards. A lot of people’s money is on Viola Davis, for her astonishing performance in The Help. I wouldn’t be surprised if the actress award went to Meryl Streep, but my bet is on Viola. Still, Michelle has won a couple of things in the lead up to tonight…

As expected (and becoming somewhat boring), the big winner last night at the Indie’s was The Artist, which took home the top honor award of best feature. Jean Dujardin was also recognized as best male lead. Like Ms Williams, Jean took home the award at the Golden Globe Awards, but he also got the Screen Actors Guild Award, the BAFTA Award and Cannes Film Festival award. He has pretty much taken them all…but will he also claim the biggest gong of them all, the Oscar, or will we be surprised tonight? Jean Dujardin is up against Demián Bichir, George Clooney, Gary Oldman and Brad Pitt. I think everyone expects (and assumes) that Jean will take home the golden statue but I guess there is a small chance that it could go to George Clooney for his role in The Descendants.

Other winners last night included Shailene Woodley and Christopher Plummer for their supporting roles in The Descendants and Beginners, respectively.

I don’t think the Indie awards are any real indication as to what will happen tonight at the Oscars, but I guess we will know in a few hours….

My best friend’s film–a TRULY independent film– was nominated for two awards. He used unknown, local talent with practically no budget and he loses to an Oscar-nominated film? How is that remotely fair? Ugh. Hollywood.

the artist is also a truly independent film….it’s only saving grace was Harvey Weinstein, and had he not intervened, nobody would’ve given 2 shits about a silent film in black and white…
