The exciting lead up to the Oscars has definitely already begun. Feb 26 is just one week from now and we are seeing mentions of gowns and of course presenters and entertainers on the big night. The latest news is that Kermit and Miss Piggy will be presenting. There was a bit of a commotion after the producer of the main awards show decided to cut the Best Original Song performance segment (my fave part!), which would showcase The Muppets, so it seems they have been consoled by meeting them halfway. The Academy also announced yesterday that it is going to be making time for a brand-new performance from Cirque du Soleil.
A month ago we got word of the nominations… The Artist, the film getting all of the buzz lately, managed to nab 10 nominations but the Martin Scorsese film Hugo (which has gotten almost NO buzz from the public at all) bested it with 11 nominations. This year, there are 9 films up for the biggest prize — The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War Horse so it is definitely going to be an interesting show for the industry. It is great to see that the producers are also working on the entertainment side of the presentation. This is important given MILLIONS of people tune in and watch it on television all over the world.
Cirque Du Soleil is certainly a fun choice. They were involved in the broadcast in 2002 when performers danced acrobatically in front of scenes from, Charlie’s Angels and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. As much as I am looking forward to the ceremony and the spectacle I can’t help wondering if it would have been better to have found entertainment that is relevant to the show this year. I think a performance by The Muppets would have been an even better choice. Still… people on tightropes is always cool!?
