Anne Rice’s ‘The Tale Of The Body Thief’ Is Coming To The Big Screen

Great news, Anne Rice fans … an option to make a film of her novel The Tale of the Body Thief has been picked up by Imagine Entertainment (the production company of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer). Long time Rice fans will recall that Body Thief is the 4th book of her Vampire Chronicles series and features her beloved vampire hero Lestat de Lioncourt as the main protagonist. I’m a HUGE fan of The Vampire Chronicles and really love the novel The Tale of the Body Thief. But, while I am excited at the prospect of having Lestat make his return to the big screen, I am concerned about who might be cast in the lead role.

It must be a wonderful time to be Anne Rice. Not only is her return to supernatural fiction, The Wolf Gift, just a few days away from publication (look for it 2/14/12), but today comes news that The Tale of the Body Thief, Book IV of The Vampire Chronicles, is heading to the big screen! According to THR, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment has optioned the rights to Rice’s The Tale of the Body Thief. Imagine used its partnership with India’s Reliance Big Entertainment to fund the acquisition, and it is using the Imagine Reliance Writers Lab to work on the script. Lee Patterson, who wrote a well-regarded screenplay titled Snatched, is working on Body Thief. Producing with Imagine are Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and Karen Kehala-Sherwood, the Imagine exec who oversees the Lab, and the company’s Erica Huggins are exec producing.

As you may recall, Tom Cruise played Lestat in the 1994 film Interview with the Vampire and Stuart Townsend played the role in the 2002 sequel film Queen of the Damned. Any successful Lestat film is completely reliant on the right casting. I’m not sure who I’d like to see in the role but it has to be someone, well, perfect. Alexander Skarsgaard comes to mind but I don’t know that he can play another vampire while he is still featured in the HBO series True Blood. The basic premise of Tale of the Body Thief is that after centuries as a vampire, Lestat decides to trade bodies with a human so that he can be reminded of what it is like to be mortal again. When the body theif doesn’t want to give back his body, Lestat must enlist the help of others to get his body back. I am cautiously optimistic that Body Thief will make a good film but, again, it all comes down to casting. Let’s wait and see who wins the role of Lestat in this new film before we really start celebrating.

Any Anne Rice fans in the hiz? If so, which of her Vampire Chronicles books are your faves?

In book form, Queen of the Damned was best. I also liked Stuart Townsend greatly over Cruise. I’m more of a fan of The Witching Hour and the Mayfair witches than the Vampire Chronicles series.

I loved Interview! However, QotD was a little bit of a let down. I’m excited about the possibility of TofBT coming to the big screen, but I’d love a better remake of QotD and release of The Vampire Lastate.

Ryan Gosling? I think Daniel Radcliffe would make for a good Louis.

  • Andy

I share both your excitement and your concerns Trent, it all comes down to casting. I’ve had the hardest time picturing an actor that could play Lestat. I had my reservations about Tom Cruise at first but he really pulled it off, but now he’s too old to play a 20 something vampire convincingly. Lookswise, I think Ian Sommerhalder as a blonde would be perfect for the part, but I haven’t seen him act so I don’t know whether he can pull it off. And you’d also have to consider an actor for the “mortal part” of the novel, which is vital as well.

I wish we had gotten a proper film for “The Vampire Lestat” though, and start from there. I refuse to even acknowledge the mess that was “Queen of the Damned” even exists.

I work on TVD and I just don’t see Ian as a blonde, he pulls the smoldering dark look off too well. I’m also certain he couldn’t go play another vampire on the big screen while still doing TVD. I think QOFTD wasn’t that bad, it certainly could’ve been better but I did love Aaliyah as Akasha.

    • Andy

I agree about Aaliyah, she was a great choice for Akasha.

But I hate the rest. More than anything, I hate the way they combined the two books and basically left out everything that truly mattered in lieu of this goth emo rockstar crap. The story in “The Vampire Lestat” was cinematic as it is, and I long for it to see the light of day someday.

  • Andie

Im also a big fan of that novel. i cant wait i cant wait no longer. so who might be the lead role? dont have any idea so lets start this haha

  • Emma

Teddy Sears for Lestat, he was good as Patrick in American Horror story & he was good in Torchwood miracle day.

  • Daphne

    EEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkk! So excited!

  • Leisha

The vampire Lestat is by far my favorite closely followed by memnoch the devil. I thought Townsend was awful as lestat, but then again the queen of the damned was absolutely awful in it’s entirety. Tom cruise was great, bit the lestat in interview with the vampire is the bad guy, and Tom cruise is easy to dislike. Lestat in body thief is the hero of the story, we need an actor we can get behind and care about their character’s wellbeing. Joaquin Phoenix could clean up nicely??

  • Ryan

I think it’s a mistake to try and condense these stories into films. I think taking the same approach as Game of Thrones is a better idea…Turning it into a proper series where nothing is cut is a better idea.

I think the Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned where really two parts of one story…Anne Rice has said in interviews that Qotd was meant to make up for how she felt TVL wasn’t resolved properly.

  • PixiesBassline

Wow. It’s been so long since I’ve read those books, that I completely forgot what Tale of the Body Theif was even about! I hope they can find someone we all love to play Lestat.
I tried to watch Queen of the Damned not too long ago but it felt so cheesy that I turned it off. Aaliyah was the only good thing about that movie.

  • crystalblueskies

    tom hiddleston or alex skarsgard

  • Tenacious D

Aaron Johnson immediately came to mind.

  • any

I like Aaron Jhonson, but I think Travis Fimmel will be a Great Lestat……I cant wait to see this!!!!
