Taylor Swift Not Playing The Role Of Eponine In ‘Les Miserables’ Film

A few weeks ago I reported that Taylor Swift was going to be taking a lead role in the film adaptation of Les Miserables. Pink readers were pretty shocked and dismayed at the casting choice. One person even commented, “this is my fav musical and it breaks my heart to see them trying to make it popular for preteens by choosing a popstar over talent.” Well, you will be glad to know that Taylor Swift is not going to be cast. The producers have gone with a totally different pick… an experienced Broadway actress who has played the role of Eponine in Les Mis before.. who is it? Read on for more details…

The new star of the movie is Samantha Barks, an experienced musical actress. She has played the role of Eponine twice and is currently starring in a production of Oliver at the Manchester Palace. It was announced that she had been given the film role on stage at the end of her performance this week.

She tweeted soon after the curtain call: “Most incredible moment of my life!!!! X”

Lea Salonga, who played Fantine alongside Barks in the 25th anniversary concert and previously played Eponine, said: “It’s official: @SamanthaBarks will be Eponine in the Les Miz movie!!! Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!!! Thank you, casting gods!!!”

Samantha might not be known to a lot of people as she has concentrated mainly on musical theater work. She has performed in productions of Cabaret, Aladdin, and two productions of Les Miserables, the West End production and the 25th Anniversary Concert. I think this is great news for the film adaptation because they have made a wise casting choice of quality musical theater acting. Samanatha will bring experience to the screen version and will also give it more of that Broadway style having done so much of that kind of work. It was very strange that Taylor Swift had been formerly linked to the part – maybe they were just rumors, or part of the casting process but before the final decision. The film is said to include Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried which is a good thing I think, but still has some left of center choices… Sacha Baron Cohen, Russell Crowe? Still…. very happy about the choice to swap Taylor with Samantha. This is huge for her, being cast in a major film with A-list actors. This will probably change her career…

What do you think of the casting now?

I think this casting is great! I saw her in the 25th anniversary concert and she was very, very good. Taylor Swift would have sucked. She doesn’t have the voice.

  • Anne Boleyn

Thank God. I loved her as Eponine.

She is a wonderful Eponine!!! I am SO glad that the directors decided to go with such an experienced actress and wonderful vocalist, rather than try and appeal to the teeny-bop population.

As for Sacha Baron Cohen, he was excellent as Pirelli in Sweeney Todd. The role of Thernardier is not a singing-heavy role, and involves more comedic timing and acting. I do not agree with the awful choice of Russell Crowe as Javert….

i felt relieved that taylor was replaced. cant imagine eponine singing ON MY OWN accoustically.

Oh, thank god! I can actually see the film now. I wouldn’t have gone near it with Taylor Swift in it.

Samantha Barks is an excellent Eponine and deserves this opportunity – looking forward to seeing her do it.
