Taylor Swift, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried and Russell Crowe to Star in ‘Les Miserables’ – Power Cast Or Odd Mix?

Musical to Movie

What do you think of this new cast? Taylor Swift is going to be playing the role of Eponine in the upcoming film adaptation of the musical Les Miserables. The rest of the cast is pretty special too. The movie is due for release December 2012 but already there is buzz around who is going to be in it.

Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, and Aaron Tveit have already signed up, and the director is Tom Hooper, from The King’s Speech.Amanda Seyfried was also offered the role of Cosette, and Anne Hathaway scored a coveted role too. With such a star studded lineup this one is one to get excited about. The musical has been going strong for ages, and has been one of the most popular shows across theaters globally.

Just yesterday we learned that Amanda Seyfried is set to star in Lovelace with Demi Moore. Seems like Miss Seyfried is really making it big this year. I’m happy for her – she did train as a classical opera singer so this role seems spot on for her. The same goes for Hugh Jackman – he is everywhere at the moment. News yesterday was of his record breaking Broadway success, now this! They’re all busy bees at the moment!

This movie is probably going to be pretty big given the massive cast and director. And it seems everyone wanted to be a part of it. Glee’s Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson, and Evan Rachel Wood reportedly auditioned for roles and didn’t get them! It’s a shame to see anyone miss out, but this is already a big, and powerful cast. They are pretty diverse though, it is going to be interesting to see Russell and Hugh and Taylor in a scene together.

What do you think, is this a good mix or a mix-up?

I’m going to echo all the facebook comments I’m seeing today. Wrong wrong wrong. Sorry Taylor. You’re a nice girl I’m sure and a good country/pop singer. But to tackle the role of Eponine? Really? That’s an iconic role, and needs powerhouse vocals. Google all the past women who have played her. I wonder if they’ll give Taylor more voice lessons?

How for sure is this casting? I find it hard to believe, and I adore Taylor! But she isn’t that great of an actress and her voice is not what I would ever imagine for a musical?! This just seems… Odd. Lea Michele seems like the obvious choice for this role.

  3. oh lord no. taylor is a horrible choice.

Taylor doesn’t have the sheer vocal oomph to make Eponine’s role come alive. She’s too thin and airy for it.

I don’t know anything about “Les Miserables” tbh, but the cast seems really strong besides Taylor. I think she is a sweet girl, but I don’t feel she stands well outside of her teen fan base. She’s almost a little too cutesy (and a little boring) for what I imagine this role to be.

Terrible terrible casting with Taylor! This is my fav musical and it breaks my heart to see them trying to make it popular for preteens by choosing a popstar over talent :(

  7. Lisa Lisa

No no no! I can only hope this isn’t true. Please do not butcher my favorite musical by casting Taylor Swift in one of its iconic roles. Please!

I can’t believe they would cast Taylor Swift in this movie. Wasn’t her “role” in “Valentine’s Day” enough to prove her level of acting talent?

I would have thought Lea Michele would have had it in the bag, but even Lucy Hale would have been a better choice and still given the producers a “teen” angle.

You can see hear her sing when she was on American Juniors http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdC_sBHIuqU&feature=related.

Better than Taylor Swift for sure.

  9. As soon as I saw Taylor Swift was cast I immediately decided to wait for redbox. No thank you. Not gonna waste my hard earned dollars on a movie where I’ll cringe at every scene she’s in. Next!

Yeahhh I don’t know what the studio is thinking. It was gearing up to be a pretty epic movie until they threw Taylor Swift into the mix. What’s next? Justin Bieber as Gavroche?

  11. gertrude

    HEARTBREAKING. Shoulda been Lea Michele.

I mean, say what you will about her and I personally think Lea has obnoxious tendencies, but I can’t deny that Lea’s got the pipes for the role. Her several renditions of On My Own is all over YouTube and she sounds great. And it’s live. Without auto-tune. Taylor can’t even sing her damn songs live and the “acting” she’s exhibited so far in faking her being surprised at award shows, Valentine’s Day, and her music videos — all weak.

  12. Iheartaustin

Idk give her a chance I think if surreally committed to voice and acting lessons she could really surprise you! I love Lea to death but I’m interested to see Taylor

I am a HUGE taylor fan, but even i am concerned. I had HUGE hopes for this movie version… now, i’m worried. Let’s just hope she can pull it off! In all fairness…. i’m sure it’ll be autotuned and made to fit her range, but i agree lea michelle…. should have been in it! I don’t even think amanda seyfried has that great a voice… and she’s cosette for crying out loud!yikes!!!

  14. A very odd mix I feel.

  15. I like Taylor as well but she hasn’t displayed a powerful voice so far in her career. I would assume the people making this movie know what they are doing by casting her. I’m probably in the minority, but I’m glad Lea Michele didn’t get the role. Every time I see her on tv, be it on that terrible show she is on or in an interview, she is such a diva and acts SO entitled. I have NO idea why people say she has such a powerful voice. She is mediocre at best. Guess we’ll see how things turn out.

  16. ClaireMichelle

Keep in mind, Taylor has just been offered the role. I mean, I don’t know why she wouldn’t take it but at this very moment she is not signed on. Just saying. I love Taylor but I hope she passes on this project. People will tear her apart.

  17. kellye

Oh lord…is she planning to sing?!

I’m having flashbacks of Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia. Hurry I need a Valium!!

  18. I don’t remember the role of Eponine requiring someone who can do two faces: “sultry” face and “fake surprised mouth open award show” face.

The rest of the casting choices are at least interesting but this is so obviously trying to pander to a teen fan base, it’s annoying.

  19. STACY COUTURE

PLEASE NOT TAYLOR! MY FAV MUSICAL OF ALL TIME, HER VOICE IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO PLAY THIS PART! A VERY DOMINANT SOUNDING, STRONG AND MATURE VOICE IS REQUIRED FOR THIS PART AND SHE DOES NOT HAVE IT! LOVE HER SWEET AND GIRL-NEXT-DOOR SOUND AS IT IS HERS, BUT SHE IS NOT RIGHT FOR THIS PART AND I WOULD BE VERY DISAPPOINTED TO SEE HER CAST FOR IT!

  20. Anne Boleyn

Oh no. no no no no.
Talyor isn’t the right person to play Eponine.
She just doesn’t have the vocal skills to pull it off.

  21. crystalblueskies

can i shoot the producers? this is total bullshit! are they gonna make the song sound country music? auto tune it?
