Trent Reznor Plans To Write New Nine Inch Nails Music In 2012
"I plan on spending a good portion of this coming year writing with [NIN] in mind"

Trent Reznor will be releasing the soundtrack score to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo this Friday but he’s already thinking ahead to his next musical project … and according to Reznor, that next musical project will be a return to Nine Inch Nails. Altho NIN ended its live performance life back in 2009, TR always made it clear that NIN was not dead. In a new interview with BBC Radio, Reznor revealed that he plans on writing new music for Nine Inch Nails in the coming year. That doesn’t necessarily mean we will get a new NIN album next year … but it is possible. Click below to read more new NIN deets from TR‘s BBC Radio interview.

2012 will be a year that Trent Reznor uses for writing Nine Inch Nails songs, he said when interviewed by BBC Radio’s Zane Lowe. Trent said that he’ll be writing music next year, and he’ll be thinking about how to use it as Nine Inch Nails music while he’s writing. Not that we should expect a quick release of a Nine Inch Nails album … Trent Reznor is a known perfectionist and by most expectations he’ll want to get it right before it’s released. There hasn’t been a release of a new Nine Inch Nails albums since The Slip in 2008. He said the desire to start something other than Nine Inch Nails started when he needed a change, saying “I needed to commit to doing something different, and that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to return to that at some point. I felt myself pushed and pulled back into the same return of album, tour, album tour and I had a list of things I’d like to try to do in life.” He went on to say “I plan on spending a good portion of this coming year (coming up) writing with that in mind. And we’ll see what happens with it.” So I guess the takeaway here is that if he starts to like what’s being done (and it stands the test of time), it can find life as Nine Inch Nails songs and even make it as a Nine Inch Nails album. If it takes him a different way creatively, it could be a new project or just get shelved. In other Trent Reznor news, he said that the How To Destroy Angels new album is pretty much finished and is being mixed with producer Alan Moulder right now.

Hot damn, this is great news. We are just days away from a new batch of new music from TR and Atticus Ross and in 2012, we will get the debut album from How to Destroy Angels … AND NOW we learn that TR plans on writing new NIN music? OMG. Amazing days are ahead, you can be sure of that. While I wouldn’t count on seeing NIN live on stage anytime soon, I wouldn’t at all be surprised if HDTA hit the road next year to perform a few shows. This is all great news for NIN/Reznor fans. Get ready, y’all … we’re about to get a whole lotta fantastic new music!

Happy that HTDA is almost finished but so, so, so stoked about new NIN music. Will believe it when I hear it, but nice to know it’s a possibility.

Thank god. I am the biggest TR fan and I am happy he is finally getting all the accolades he deserved about 20 years ago, but his soundtrack stuff is a big snooze!

@miki — “his soundtrack stuff is a big snooze!” I completely disagree. Scores to films are meant to be atmospheric not necessarily song-ish. Longtime fans of TR’s work know that he has always included instrumental pieces on his albums … so being able to score films must be a thrill for him. I, too, prefer the songs he has written over his instrumental work but I feel we are very lucky to have such a massive body of work that includes more than just one type of musical genre.

@Trent: Obviously that’s just my opinion, and I will continue to be a supporter of his and am very much looking forward to his new album. Also, I understand the limitations of the medium, but I just haven’t been feeling his soundtrack work, or the stuff he did with his wife–I just don’t find it as compelling as his earlier work, including the album instrumentals and B-sides, etc., many of which I own and have been listening to for the greater part of my life. I think the man is a genius, and changed music permanently, and he is in my top 10 artists of all time, but the newer stuff lacks the complexity of textures, and a certain amount of passion for me. Again–it’s just my humble opinion, which doesn’t amount to a whole lot, and is not meant to be disrespectful of him, or anyone else’s opinion!

@miki — Please don’t apologize, I didn’t mean to imply you were being disrespectful … I actually appreciate that you took the time to make your point clear. I’m just offering my perspective. It’s interesting that you say that you don’t find the new material as complex or as textured as his older stuff … because I feel the exact opposite. IMHO, the new stuff is so structured and so textured that it makes his older stuff feel more … poppy. I don’t know if that’s the right description but in comparison, the older NIN stuff (which I LIVE FOR) seems more perfectly packaged … while the new, instrumental stuff seems more raw … and evolving. As for HTDA, we’ve only heard a small portion of that music … I’m reserving judgment until we get to hear the debut album in full. Again, I really appreciate that you took the time to offer your opinion … and I have to disagree with you again, I feel that your “humble opinion” does amount to a whole lot. As a fan, you have the most important opinion of all.

I appreciate that–I guess that’s why he has such a broad fanbase–because he has something to appeal to all tastes.
