Movie Review: ‘The Ides Of March’
The TV Guide

Altho the George Clooney and Ryan Gosling film The Ides of March came out months ago, I never got around to seeing it and sadly totally forgot all about it. Thankfully, theaters in LA play these sorts of movies longer than most cities and David and I got the chance to see it at the posh Landmark Theater in West LA, last night. To be honest, I had heard not great things about the film so I wasn’t too excited. The only reason I agreed to go, I must confess, was because it was showing in a movie theater with couch seating. I am SO glad I decided to go because, man, this film is really fantastic!

I should’ve known not to doubt the amazingness of any Ryan Gosling film … and for that, I will be eternally sorry. The Ides of March tells a compelling story that has enough intrigue to keep the viewer interested and enough mystery to keep people guessing. Ryan Gosling is truly the star of this film. Altho Clooney gets top billing (he is the director, after all), this film is really all about Gosling‘s superb performance. The entire cast did a fantastic job, no question, but Ryan has proved again that he is a new force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. I’m not sure if The Ides of March is still playing in theaters where you live but I urge you to check out this film any way you can (DVD, cable, etc.). I was so surprised by how much I loved it, I want others to be surprised, too.

OH and as for the swanky theater we saw the movie in, yeah, it was pretty sweet:

The whole theater is nothing but loveseat couches … it’s a nice way to watch movies. I love the Arclight Theater here in LA but man, I will deffo be going back to the Landmark to see more movies in this kind of environment ;D

Yes. You SHOULD be sorry for doubting Ryan Gosling.

i loved it too! except some girl started projectile vomiting everywhere 10 minutes until the end of the movie so naturally I bolted and I’m not really sure how it ended :(

I still have to see it and your review pushed me into it! The Ides was gone as soon as it got here! Which made me think that it was a bomb but as things go, and I am a paralegal and have participated in several elections I would understand the un-understandable. It still is playing at 2 theaters and I intend to see it next week! Peace!

I just saw this movie for the first time this weekend as well and I loved it! :) It just further solidified my need to marry Ryan Gosling! Haha.

My parents saw it and said it was great. I kinda just want to see it cuz it was filmed in Cincinnati. It was also filmed in Detroit, see anything you recognize? It is fun seeing movies filmed in your hometown, isn’t it? :)

Ryan Gosling continues to top my list of the best actors of my generation time and time again. He has had a great year with solid performances in this one, “Drive” and “Crazy Stupid Love” as well as his past ones – “Lars and the Real Girl”, “Blue Valentine”, “Half Nelson”, “The Believer”. He is absolutely brill.

It started slow and then it really picks up steam!! The first ten minutes I leaned over to my friend and was like “what the H, this is going to be horrible”. THen by the end we both said “HOLY COW, that was AMAZING!!”. I LOVED IT TOO!!!

  9. The Ides of March is definitely a great film. It really just caps off Ryan Gosling’s year. With Crazy, Stupid, Love. and Drive beforehand, he couldn’t have asked for a better year. I saw it when it came out and really liked it a lot. I had never seen a film before centred on a campaign publicist; I thought that perspective was pretty cool. First George Clooney-directed film I’ve seen and his vision worked for me.

I must have different taste in movies than the rest of you. I was really underwhelmed by this movie. Ryan gosling did a great job but I’ve never hopped on the clooney train. I find him quite annoying and too cocky. The movie was slow and by the time it started to pick up speed my interest was gone.
