Great news Dexter fans, the show has been renewed by Showtime for at least another two seasons. While we are in the middle of the 6th season of the show, we can now look forward to seasons 7 and 8 to come — for sure. In the past few weeks, it has been reported that negotiations were ongoing between Dexter lead Michael C. Hall and Showtime so I guess we now know they have come to an agreement. SHOWTIME has ordered two more seasons of its award-winning, top-rated drama series DEXTER, starring Golden Globe® award-winning actor Michael C. Hall, it was announced today by David Nevins, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc. On the heels of Hall and SHOWTIME closing a new, two season deal for Hall to return to the series, production will begin on season seven in 2012 in Los Angeles. Seasons seven and eight will consist of 12 episodes each. The Emmy®-nominated DEXTER opened its sixth season in October and continues to earn impressive ratings, most recently delivering its fifth consecutive week of growth. Season-to-date, the series is averaging 5.12 million weekly viewers on all platforms (including On Demand, replays and DVR), making it the highest rated season yet. Season six of DEXTER is executive produced by John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Scott Buck, Manny Coto and Michael C. Hall. “DEXTER’s enormous success is a real tribute to the great achievements of its cast, producers, and the powerhouse performance of Michael C. Hall,” said Nevins. “The series is bigger than it’s ever been in its sixth season, both in terms of audience and its impact on the cultural landscape. Together with Michael, the creative team on the show has a very clear sense of where they intend to take the show over the next two seasons and, as a huge fan, I’m excited to watch the story of Dexter Morgan play out.” Michael C. Hall added, “On behalf of the entire DEXTER family, we relish the invitation to delve ever deeper into Dexter’s world.” One of the most acclaimed shows on television, DEXTER stars Hall, who has earned multiple Emmy nominations as well as a SAG award for his role as a complicated and conflicted blood-spatter expert for the Miami police department who moonlights as a serial killer. The show has received multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for best television drama series, as well as a prestigious Peabody Award in 2008, and was twice named one of AFI’s Top Ten television series. The series also stars Jennifer Carpenter, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, Lauren Vélez, David Zayas, and James Remar.
This is the best news ever. Hands down, Dexter remains my all-time fave show that is currently in production so I cannot even express how happy I am to know that, at the very least, we get 2 more seasons of the show … and the current season isn’t even finished yet! I’ve been able to preview upcoming episodes of this season of Dexter and, OMG, shizz gets really good. Happy Dexter Day, y’all! Is this not the BEST NEWS EVER?!

I really hope that means next season Deb will find out about Dexter, and season 8 will be him dealing with her.
yayyyy :D Best news EVER!!!! :D
This is wonderful news!
SO HAPPY!!! I love this show so much..I never want to have to say good-bye to Dexter!
Trent, have you figured out the secret yet for this season? I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but if you’ve seen upcoming episodes, is it something that they reveal soon or do you think they’ll wait till the end of the season? It seems SO obvious to me and I keep picking up on all these things, I’m hoping they won’t try to drag it out too soon.
I really hope you know what I’m talking about!
OMG you’re killing me. WHAT IS IT? lol
I sooo want to tell cause I have a big mouth but I don’t want to spoil for anyone who doesn’t want to know.
I’ll just say though it’s something with this season’s villans and how they interact with others. ;)
I think I know exactly what you’re talking about and I picked up on it right away..I guess I could be wrong, but we’ll see!! :)
Sweeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!! I sure hope the next 2 seasons are better. This one seems to be a little draggish. I love Michael C Hall … I love the character of Deb; she always makes me laugh. And I’m happy that these two professional actors didn’t let their personal life get in the way of the show.
No offense to Colin Hanks or Edward James Olmos but I hope the next two seasons have more compelling villains. I am so over the Doomsday killer.
So excited but i just hope that they stop at season 8. I want the show to end when it is still good and not get dragged out to the point that people arent sad to see it go!
Wondering what happened w the salary dispute. Love Michael C Hall but b*tching over 4 million is insane. The money he makes to film 12 episodes a year is more than I will make in a lifetime. Saddens me that he’d follow suit with so many other actors/sports players and want even more money. Yes i get that he earns Showtime tons of money but its all relative. Showtime makes that money through charging a hefty fee for their channel which contributes to paying these salaries. Regardless of whether I like an actor or dislike them i get really disappoInted when they cause drama over such a large number of money. Just my opinion of course.
But yay for 2 more seasons and here’s to hoping the show ends on a GREAT note. This season has been phenomenal. Great return to form after last season.
@Jenilee — “Love Michael C Hall but b*tching over 4 million is insane.” It may sound “insane” to those of us who don’t make that kind of money, but it’s all relative. The show does not exist without MCH. Showtime makes a fortune off of Dexter, why shouldn’t MCH make more money each year he stars on the show as a result? I full support MCH’s desire to be paid more money for his hard work. Dexter is THE best show on TV, a show that makes a lot of money … yes, he absolutely deserves to be compensated. As for the “bitching” comment, do you think it’s “bitching” when anyone else in any other profession demands that they get a raise when their job performance results in more money for the company? Again, it’s all relative … but, IMHO, hard working people deserve to be paid higher wages if their work continues to improve.
As you said Trent and as I said above…its all relative. Showtime makes money off the show yes. Does the subscription need to be so much per month? Does the DVD set for a 12 episode season from showtime need to cost more than a 22 episode season from CBS/NBC/etc? We pay more for these things to pay these salaries. Just like tickets for concerts and sporting events go to paying these musicians and athletes so much money. He needed to make 4 million more? That’s more than I will EVER make in a LIFETIME as a teacher yet he will make it in 2 years just as a raise. Entertainers/sports players get paid TOO MUCH plain and simple. Yes they work hard….harder than people with regular jobs? Maybe yes on some days but worth millions more? Not really. Yes people deserve raises when they performance is consistently great but raises for these stars are insane. It was insane when the stars of Friends (a show I LOVE and stars I still LOVE) wanted 1 million an episode, and its still ridiculous now.
@JeniLee — “It was insane when the stars of Friends (a show I LOVE and stars I still LOVE) wanted 1 million an episode, and its still ridiculous now.” And it will continue to grow. That is just the nature of Entertainment.
That’s true but it doesnt make it right
im happy. just as long as they dont push the show too long and have it end on a crappy note.
