Last month we learned that Sarah Michelle Gellar would be returning to All My Children, the soap opera that made her famous, one last time before the show goes off the air for good next week. SMG made it clear that she would not be returning in the role of Kendall Hart exactly because she didn’t want to take the role from the actress who plays the character now. In order to not spoil the surprise, click below for our first look at SMG‘s return to AMC and find out how she will be making her soap opera return — IF YOU DARE.

All My Children will soon end its staggering 41-year run but not before one of its most famous grads drops in to say goodbye. Ringer star Sarah Michelle Gellar, who won a 1995 Daytime Emmy as Kendall Hart, the wicked, sexually audacious daughter of Erica Kane, will return to the ABC soap September 21. Gellar approached the show herself, specifically asking not to play Kendall since the role is now owned by Alicia Minshew — so instead she’s going to play a delusional patient at Pine Valley Hospital who thinks she’s Erica’s daughter! The first person Gellar’s character encounters — and recognizes — is Dr. Maria Santos Grey, played by fellow AMC alum Eva La Rue (CSI: Miami). Says the soap’s exec producer Julie Carruthers: “It was a great pleasure to welcome Sarah back to Pine Valley and especially fun to have her character wink to the audience with fun lines that referenced her previous character.”
LOL!! I love this. THIS is the perfect soap opera way for an actor to return to a show. Brilliant, Brilliant!!

SMG hasn’t aged since 2003.
I was so hoping that was what they were going to do.
God…I watch too many soap operas, if I actually sensed that coming.
I really wish I had been into this show! It seems like so much fun.
I used to watch AMC during this time period. I was actually in my senior year of high school in 1995. I LOVED her character on AMC. AMC was really in its prime during that year, it got worse and worse after that. So it’s nice that they are acknowledging a time period when the show was actually good.
LOVE this! I watched when she was on back in the day too! I can’t believe AMC won’t be on anymore.. :(
I love Sarah’s return, but also Dr. Maria!!!
i can’t wait for this! i think it’s so awesome that these “hot shot” actors are going back to their stomping grounds as a way to say thank you! julianne moore did it on as the world turns which was soooo cool.
even though the show is going to live on in the online format, it’s great that they’re still paying homage to its history!
