Wow … what started out as a silly rumor turned out to be … reality. The Motion Picture Academy announced today that comedian/actor/Academy Award nominee Eddie Murphy has been chosen as the host of the 84th annual Academy Awards next year. To be honest, I didn’t place one bit of credence to the rumors that Murphy might get the hosting gig … so I’m a bit surprised. But, now that I know that Brett Ratner is directing the show … it makes sense. To bet honest, I’m not even really concerned with the idea of Eddie as the host … I’m much more concerned that Ratner will be directing. Yikes!!

Oscar® nominee Eddie Murphy, whose performing career spans movies, television and the stage, will host this year’s Academy Awards show on Sunday, February 26, 2012, telecast producers Brett Ratner and Don Mischer announced today. This will be Murphy’s first hosting stint on the Oscars®.
“Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever,” said Ratner. “With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances – especially on stage – I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show Don and I want to produce in February.”
Commented Mischer, “Eddie is a truly ground-breaking performer, whose amazingly diverse array of roles has won him a devoted audience of all ages. His quick wit and charisma will serve him very well as Oscar host.”
“I am enormously honored to join the great list of past Academy Award hosts from Hope and Carson to Crystal, Martin and Goldberg, among others,” said Murphy. “I’m looking forward to working with Brett and Don on creating a show that is enjoyable for both the fans at home and for the audience at the Kodak Theatre as we all come together to celebrate and recognize the great film contributions and collaborations from the past year.”
Murphy began his career at the age of 15 as a stand-up comedian. In 1980, at the age of 19, he joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live,” becoming the show’s youngest cast member to that point, and bringing to life many of the show’s most memorable characters. His 1983 album “Eddie Murphy: Comedian” won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording. It included portions of his groundbreaking HBO special “Eddie Murphy Delirious.” In 1987, “Eddie Murphy Raw” was theatrically released and went on to gross over $50 million. Murphy made his feature film debut in 1982 with the classic “48 Hrs.” and would go on to star in such box-office hits as “Beverly Hills Cop” and the “The Nutty Professor” and “Shrek” franchises. All told, movies in which he has performed have earned in excess of $7 billion worldwide during their theatrical releases.
Murphy earned an Oscar nomination in 2006 for his supporting role in “Dreamgirls.”
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.
HMMM … this is … interesting. Clearly the Academy is trying something different with next year’s show. Considering how panned this year’s show was, I guess I can’t blame them for going off the rails a bit. I guess we’ll have to see how the show turns out but … what are your thoughts about this news? Are you happy? Or … not?

If it is Eddie from the 80′s and early 90′s then pure genius but I think that Eddie would be way too graphic and hurtful/funny for the audience on TV and at the awards ceremony. The Eddie of the last 15 years or so isn’t funny. I am sure he will do a watered down generic version of some good bits.
I DO NOT like Eddie Murphy….he lost his funny. He’s annoying and just blah
This would be awesome if Eddie Murphy was still relevant at all.
Seriously! So weird.
If it’s as good as ‘The Haunted Mansion’, I’m there.
I just don’t understand why they don’t ask NPH.
that’s a good point. he would be hilarious and to echo what Mr Gyllenhall said if it’s the eddie from the 80s and 90s the show would be awesome. But this is the Oscars, he can’t go there guns blazing. and Brett Ratner is hosting?!…. no comment.
I meant to say ” and brett ratner is DIRECTING?!” see how bad this idea is it’s making me mess up while typing. damn you Brett Ratner!
I guess it could go either way. If Eddie can bring new characters, comedy and some edge, he could kill it. If he brings the Klump sensibility, however…ugh.
His manager deserves a bigger cut for pulling this rabbit our of the hat. I watch the Oscars every year without fail and I’m disappointed in this choice.
I think some of ya’ll our sleeping on Eddie and mark my words he is going to be great! The Oscars need someone with quick funny wit and Eddie still has that. With that said, I’m praying the Eddie of SNL/Trading Places/Beverly Hills Cop/Delirious shows up…I just love Eddie and I’m praying he does well!
he’s sooo obnoxious…
I think this will be fun! I know the director just directed him a movie so clearly he was impressed!
