Princess Fiona
The TV Guide

Last night Jordan and I made our way to the Largo Theater here in LA to see Fiona Apple play a benefit concert with a few of her friends. Because it had been YEARS since I last saw Fiona in concert, I jumped at the chance to see her perform live once again. Because the show as a benefit concert, Fiona performed a handful of her own songs (On The Bound, Fast As You Can and Extraordinary Machine) and then a bunch of covers of old classics and standards. While the structure of the show was a bit … odd … Fiona‘s singing was as lush and wonderful as I remembered.

The Largo Theater has a strict no cameras policy so I was unable to snap any photos. The show was structured as kind of a hodge podge of songs and instrumentations that appeared to be put together by Fiona herself. I have to say, Fiona looked about the same as you might remember her … and, if at all possible, her stunning bone structure is even more stunning. No lie, Fiona was a bit kooky last night but it added to the specialness of the night. In between songs, Fiona would eat bites of cake … seriously. She would also apologize for swearing in between songs … then would slap herself in the forehead as punishment. Weird, I know. But when she was performing, that’s when the magic happened. Fiona‘s sister came out to duet with her (I believe her name is Maude, and she has a beautiful voice as well) and Zach Galifianakis did some stand-up … yeah, it was a weird show. Still, I had a blast and loved every second of it. I got to meet a couple of Pink readers at the show last night (hey, Monica!) which really just made the night superfun:

Fiona made no mention of a new album nor did she perform any new material. It looks like we’ll just have to wait a bit longer to hear new stuff from Fiona Apple.

Tonight, I’m going to a screening of The Lion King in 3D. I haven’t seen the film on the big screen since the mid90s so I’m excited. Hope your Thursday is going well!

She smacked herself in the forehead a lot when I saw her sing with Nickel Creek a while back. Very odd, but I don’t care. She is beautiful and I love her voice and music. Smack away!!

Glad you enjoyed the show! Sometimes the most brillant creative people can also be a little quirky. I think that is sometimes part of what enables them to do what they do in such a unique way.

Saw you there last night- such a great show. Her banter in between songs is priceless, but she can do no wrong by me. So glad she played some of her songs…but the fix won’t last long until I’m wanting more!

http://www.maudemaggart.com/ This is her sister. When I worked at the now defunct Plush Room in San Francisco, Maud performed there and after the show one night I asked her to sing the song “Maybe” from Annie for me… she did and I fell in love with her.
